UNTV Cup: PBA Legends Face-off set for off-season tournament

Posted on: May 20th, 2019

Your UNTV Cup Sunday games binge-watching will be more exciting as your PBA Legends will once again come together to play for a cause this off-season before season 8 gathers steam.

The charity basketball tournament is no longer an unfamiliar territory for the legends of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) as they have been in collaboration with UNTV since years ago.

It was in an exhibition game in 2015 when the idea of forming a foundation for former professional basketball players in the Philippines was conceived during the game between the  PBA Legends and the UNTV Cup All-Stars.

The said game aimed to give assistance to PBA Legend Avelino “Samboy” Lim Jr., also known as the Skywalker, who slipped into a coma after collapsing during one exhibition game in November 2014.

In 2017, public service advocate and UNTV Cup founder Kuya Daniel Razon granted one million- peso seed money to the group as an initial fund in helping former professional basketball players who are sick or have medical concerns.

A year after, the PBA Legends Foundation organized the first ever PBA Legends Charity Golf Tournament. In August 2018, the foundation also had the opportunity to extend assistance to former SMB and Welcoat player Joey Mente who succumbed to cancer.

Another charity deed of PBA Legends Foundation was giving financial assistance to the family of former Crispa player Johnny Revilla who passed away at the age of 70 in December 2018.

The biggest and much-awaited hardcourt reunion of the Philippine basketball superstars will take place on February 17 at Smart Araneta Coliseum. Save the date!#PBALegendsUNTV

And in February 2019, yet another basketball for charity was held. The Araneta Coliseum was filled with die-hard fans of Alaska, San Miguel, Purefoods and Ginebra for the Return of the Rivals. The said event was able to raise P3,000,000 cash donation as an addition to the seed fund of the PBA Legends Foundation for the benefit of former professional basketball players who are in need.

This off-season, let’s relive the glory days of the Philippine basketball in the name of charity.
