Senate Defenders is just one win away from getting the championship trophy since winning the first game in the best of three series of the UNTV Cup season 6 finals last Sunday at the Pasig City Sports Center.

The Defenders piled up huge lead as much as over 20 points against the Kamao with 77-62 at the final buzzer.

Senate’s team defense has crippled the Malacañang-PSC offensively for most of the ball game.

Jeffry Sanders was hailed as the best player of the game with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks and 1 steal.

Senate Defenders’ Head Coach Mike Fermin said, “[Our win] was a collective effort specially on the defensive side. So, credit goes to the players, they played well, they executed the plan properly.”

While Senator Sonny Angara added, “Pasalamat kami sa Senate fans, we had a good game dahil dala din kami noong energy ng crowd. Congrats to our coach, to our players. Magaling din yung nilaro ng kabila.”

(We thank the Senate fans, we had a good game because the energy of the crowd boosted us. Congratulations also to our coach, to our players. The other team also played good.)

Senator Joel Villanueva also expressed, “I have to give it to my team mates, to the entire team, sa coaching staff namin talagang lahat nagsasakripisyo, lahat more than willing to walk etxra mile para makuha itong victory na ito.”

(I have to give credit to my teammates, to the entire team, to our coaching staff. They really sacrificed. All are more than willing to walk the extra mile to get this victory.)

Present on the venue to support the Team Senate, were the staff, the beneficiaries and the minority floor leader Senator Franklin Drilon.

“Ako po’y narito para sumuporta sa UNTV at sa mga teams at lalo na po sa ating mga beneficiaries, congratulations po,” the senator stated.

(I am here to support UNTV [Cup] and all the teams and most specially to the beneficiaries, congratulations po.)

Meanwhile on the battle for 3rd, the AFP Cavaliers defeated the NHA Builders, 85-84.

On the first half of the ball game, the Cavaliers just lead by 3 points, 44-41.

But the men in uniform exploded in the 3rd quarter, 74-55.

The Builders counter attacked in the last quarter to close the gap to just 1 point down to the final buzzer with a final three-point shot from Alvin Vitug.

NHA Head Coach Silverio Palad III said, “Medyo kinapos, lumamang sila disinueve, hinabol namin… yung intensity nawala kasi kaya lumubo.. so noong nagkroon na ng intensity wala na eh naubusan ng oras.”

(We fell short, the AFP was able to lead by 19 points so we tried to catch up… we lost our intensity that’s why the lead bloated… but when we gained intensity, we ran out of time.)

Pro-baller-turned soldier, Boyet Bautista was hailed as the best player of the game with 12 points, 4 steals, 1 rebound and 1 assist.

Baustista said, “Napakaganda pa rin yung natapos namin nanalo kami. Then, maganda pa rin nakapagbigay kami ng magandang regalo sa benificiaries namin.”

(It’s good that we got to end the season with a win. Then, it’s also good that we can donate our cash prize to our beneficiary.)

The Cavaliers received P1,000,000 for their chosen beneficiary AFP – Educational Benefit System Office and P200,000 for the team.

The Builders, on the other hand, received P500,000 for NHA Provident Fund Association and P100,000 for the team.

The game 2 of the best of 3 finals series will be held on May 12, Monday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Should the Senate Defenders win again, they would get the top prize of P4,000,000 for their beneficiaries and P500,000 for the team, while Malacañang-PSC Kamao would receive P2,000,000 for their beneficiaries and P300,000 for the team.

All prizes are tax-free.

But should the Kamao win, they will force a do-or-die Game 3 on May 19, Monday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. — Bernard Dadis | UNTV News & Rescue
