PASIG CITY, Philippines — UNTV Cup’s two-time champion teams, AFP Cavaliers and Judiciary Magis, proved their caliber on Sunday’s double-header at the Pasig City Sports Center.

Season 4 finals Most Valuable Player Boyet Bautista and Rookie Romeo Almerol led the AFP Cavaliers to win against the GSIS Furies.

The soldiers dominated quarters one to four to mark a 103-95 win.

For Coach Sonny Manucat, preparation with goal setting is everything.

“Talagang nag-prepare kami. Sabi ko, first impression for the other teams na champion team tayo. Saka we all agree na we’re on the same page again, na goal namin semifinals, then finals again,” Coach Manucat said.

(We really prepared for this. I told the boys, we need to make first impression to other teams that we are a champion team. And we all agreed to be in the same page again that our goal is to reach semifinals and then finals.)

On the GSIS side, Coach Myk Saguitguit admits they came up against a big challenge, with only nine out of his 17 members able to play for the Furies.

“Maraming hindi nakapunta ngayong game na ito pero maganda ang nakita kong result even [though] we lost this game. Nakita ko mas maganda ang gelling nila ngayon compared to the last season,” Coach Saguiguit said.

(Many of our players were not able to come for this game but I saw a good result even though we lost this game. I saw that we had a good gelling this game compared to the last season.)

Meanwhile, in the Judiciary-Ombudsman hard court battle, the Judiciary Magis toppled the Ombudsman Graft Busters with a 39-point advantage, 115-76.

Season 5 MVP Chester “The Elevator” Tolomia, who made 20 points and 6 rebounds and Julius Rabino who bucketed 19 points and grabbed two boards, were hailed as the best players of the game. — Bernard Dadis / UNTV News and Rescue
