MANILA, Philippines — Wish 107.5 and several Asian-American rappers banded together to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.
A group of Asian-American rappers released a 15-track album called ‘Face Value’, an Asian-American history on record. The song contains tracks that depicts the history, and experiences of discrimination in previous years.
In a virtual conference hosted by Wish 107.5, Jason Chu said they are trying to put Asian-American history on record. He also said that it is also important that their music is also supported by their own community.
“I’m sure many of you are aware of how deeply impacted the global Asian Community has been by COVID-19 right this pandemic is attacking not only our bodies but our communities there have been so much racism and we didn’t want to just you know approach it. We wanted to dig in a little bit more right and we wanted to tell the history of our communities,” he said.
Among the composers is rapper Alan Z who wrote ‘Model Minority’ sung by Filipino-American singer-songwriter AJ Rafael. The song is about the violence experienced by a Filipino in New York City.
“It was really cool because it was my first time working with AJ on like a writing level and to hear him perform and executed the way like I had in my head with the melody it’s magical. That’s one of those kind of moments you’ll cherish knowing that you work with somebody of that stature,” according to Alan Z.
Neela, one of the artists, said there is a need to bring communities and culture together through music.
“There is so much division within all of the community sometimes and as part of the younger generation, I feel like we really have the power to bring all of our communities together and let you know the effects of colonialism that I’ve kind of divided our communities really unite each other and I think music is a great way to do that,” she said.
Songs in Face Value were performed by Crazy Rich Asians actor Ronny Chieng, rapper Chow Mane, Ruby Ibarra, and many others. (With reports from Sonny Cos)
