GSIS’ Carlo Gonzalez (0) tries to block the acrobatic shot of DENR’s Rocky Calungcagin (32) during their game on September 15, 2019 at Pasig City Sports Center for the first round elimination round of UNTV Cup.

The rookie team DENR Warriors exhibited their fierceness when they demolished the GSIS Furies in the first game of the triple-header of UNTV Cup Season 8 at Pasig City Sports Center last Sunday (September 15).

GSIS’ reinforcement player Jonathan Parreño immediately released 4 three-point shots in the first quarter to lead the team, 16-8. DENR quickly answered with a 10 to zero run and tied the game at 18-all. Reneboy Banzali also added a three-point shot. The first quarter ended at 25-20.

The effective tandem of Parreño and Banzali continued in the second quarter. They produced 4 three-pointers and 4 points coming off from steals to give GSIS the lead at the half, 51-42.

On the 3rd period, DENR Warrior’s blood was awakened as Forest Protection Officer Ralph Lansang produced 21 points of the teams 26 quarter points.

These include a slam dunk from the 6ft 4-inch Ralph Lansang who also had a three-point play lay-up to tie the score at 67. The third period ended with 68-74 score in favor of GSIS.

The last period got more exciting as DENR and GSIS fought toe-to-toe.

In the last 51 seconds, Banzali made a three-point shot to give GSIS the lead, 98-95, but Lansang made 3 of 4 free throws to tie again the lead.

Lansang detonates a 3-point bomb in the final 2.9 seconds to recover the lead vs GSIS, 101-98, to end the game.

Best Player of the Game Ralph Lansang produced a total 51 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and 1 block.

“Mahirap pero masarap, halos hindi ko na maisip na mananalo pa kami noon. Paghawak ko ng bola nakita ko lang 8 seconds. pu-push ko ito kahit mag mintis ok lang kasi all naman , hindi ko expect papasok (It’s hard but it feels great. I didn’t think we will win. When I had it in the last 8 seconds, I said to myself I will just shoot, score knowing that the score is tied. I didn’t expect my shot will connect),” BPG Lansang said.

GSIS Furies Head Coach Roger Yap said, “Sinuwerte lang din sila bandang huli, sa pagkakaalam ko sa lahat ng tira niya sa three points, yun pa yung pumasok… breaks of the game (They were just lucky enough in the end game. I all that Lansang shot in the three-point area, that winning shot was the one counted).”

On the other hand, Ed Rivera also scored 22 points, while Melvin Bangal contributed 15 points for the environment warriors.

While for GSIS, Jonathan Parreño led the team with 49 points and Reneboy Banzali tallied 21 points.

Meanwhile in the second game of Sunday’s triple header, Ombudsman Graftbusters spoiled the debut game of SSS Kabalikat.

From the 17-15 score in the first quarter, the Graftbusters pulled away and left the SSS a chilling 110-73 loss.

In the main game, the NHA Builders shot down PNP Responders in an explosive showdown, 85-81. END.
