Trillanes aims for 2022 presidential bid if Robredo won’t run

MANILA, Philippines—Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said that he intends to run for president in the 2022 national elections.

In his Twitter post, Trillanes said he is ready to become the principal candidate for president under 1SAMBAYAN Coalition.

This was after he reported that Vice President Leni Robredo might be preparing to run for Governor of Camarines Sur in 2022.

He clarified, though, that he is not dividing the opposition and is willing to give way to Robredo in case she decides to run for the presidency.

“I never said that VP Leni already decided to run for Governor. In fact, it is very clear in my statement that I would give way to her in case she finally decides to run for President,” he said.

Both Atty. Barry Gutierrez and Liberal Party Stalwart Cong. Teddy Baguilat said that the Vice President still has no decision regarding the 2022 national elections.

Meanwhile, in reaction to Trillanes’ statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said it is Trillanes’ right as a Filipino to aim in becoming president. However, Roque said Robredo might still have a plan in running.

“Libre pong mangarap, hayaan po nating mangarap si dating Senador Trillanes, karapatan po niya iyan bilang isang Pilipino. Pangalawa, mukhang hindi naman po siya makakatakbo dahil nilinaw ni Vice President Leni na tatakbo pa rin siya, at least nandiyan pa rin ang plano,” he said.

(It is free to dream, let former Senator Trillanes dream. It is his right as a Filipino. Secondly, it looks like Vice President Leni would still run, or at least, there is still a plan.) -AAC (with reports from Nel Maribojoc)

Presidential bets send help to address potable water shortage in Odette-hit areas

Maris Federez   •   December 28, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Presidential aspirants Isko Moreno, Bongbong Marcos, Manny Pacquiao, and Leni Robredo individually sent assistance to areas severely hit by Typhoon Odette and addressed the problem of not having sufficient drinking water in these areas.

Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso on Monday said he sent a team from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) to Cebu City to help in the clearing operations in the area and provide clean drinking water with the use of the water filtration machine that the team brought.

MDRRMO Director Arnel Angeles said water tankers went around the city to provide the needs of Cebu City residents for potable water.

Former Senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, on the other hand, sent gallons of drinking water and filtration kits to the victims of Typhoon Odette.

Marcos noted the importance of filtration kits as residents in the typhoon-hit areas were left without a good source of clean drinking water.

He said this is the same problem that was seen and experienced by his team when they sent help to areas ravaged by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

The BBM-Sara tandem promised to continue sending assistance to the areas that were hit by Odette.

Meanwhile, Senator Manny Pacquiao expressed concern over the effects of the shortage of drinking water on the health of the people in the typhoon-ravaged areas.

He said that he has been receiving reports that people in these areas were rendered helpless and just get drinking water from unsafe sources.

Pacquiao said that his team is scouting from suppliers of water filtration systems and portable toilets to be set up in evacuation centers.

Vice President Leni Robredo, in the meantime, said she will send 30 tons of drinking water to the provinces of Cebu and Bohol.

Robredo thanked her volunteers who helped and sent assistance to the typhoon victims. —/mbmf (from the report of UNTV Correspondent Nel Maribojoc)

Bong Go on presidential bid: ‘A matter of destiny’

Maris Federez   •   November 25, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — After more than a week since he launched his presidential bid, Senator Christopher ‘Bong’ Go on Thursday said that running for the country’s highest office “is a matter of destiny.”

“At present, I continue to seek guidance from the Divine Being for I believe that the Presidency is a matter of destiny.  Kung para sayo yan, para talaga sayo yan,” Go said in a statement.

He felt that perhaps it is not yet time for him to push through with his sudden decision to run as president in the 2022 national and local elections.

“Running for the Presidency is something I have never dreamed of. Iniiwasan ko ang posisyon na ito, but fate — as I said — has a way of turning things around. Nagdesisyon ang partido at si Pangulong Duterte and I accepted the challenge.”

“Pero sa ngayon, baka hindi ko pa po panahon. Ako yung taong handang magsakripisyo para wala nang maipit, masaktan at mamroblema,” the senator said.

Go stated that days after he filed his certificate of candidacy, he came to a realization that his heart was not in it even as he considers other people around him, especially his family and President Rodrigo Duterte.

“But in the past few days po, I realized that my heart and mind are contradicting my own actions,” Go said. “Talagang nagreresist po ang aking katawan, puso at isipan. Pati po ang aking pamilya ay nahihirapan.”

“Ayoko na pong mahirapan si Pangulo at yung mga supporters natin. Mahal ko po si Pangulong Duterte. Matanda na rin po siya at ayaw ko siyang bigyan pa ng dagdag na problema,” he added.

Go said he is leaving his fate to God and is willing to sacrifice for the good of the country.

“Having said this, I leave my fate to God and the Filipino people as I vow to do my best every day to serve selflessly and tirelessly. I am willing to make the supreme sacrifice for the good of our country, and for the sake of unity among our supporters and leaders,” he said.

The lawmaker also said that no matter where his fate will take him, he commits that he will continue to do provide due service to the Filipino people in his own capacity.

“Marami namang paraan upang makatulong sa ating kapwa Pilipino. Ako naman, kahit saan man ako ipadpad ng aking tadhana, patuloy po akong magseserbisyo. Kung anuman ang aking magiging desisyon, ipapasa-Diyos ko na lang ang lahat alang-alang sa kung ano ang makakabuti sa bayan,” Go said. —/mbmf

COMELEC spox says vote buying a poll offense

Robie de Guzman   •   October 27, 2021

COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez

MANILA, Philippines – Vote buying is an election offense “regardless of financial situation or noble intentions,” Commission on Elections (COMELEC) spokesperson James Jimenez said Wednesday.

Jimenez made the remark a day after Vice President Leni Robredo said that Filipinos should take the money being offered to them but still vote for their preferred candidate.

Robredo, a presidential aspirant and standard bearer of the opposition for the 2022 elections, on Tuesday said that Filipinos who are offered money in exchange for their vote should accept the money but still vote according to their conscience.

While vote buying is illegal, she said that individuals engaging in such act is hard to apprehend as it is not done in public and the money could now be transferred electronically.

She made the response when asked on the issue of vote buying during a forum with a group of household service workers who support her election bid.

“Lagi kong sinasabi, tanggapin niyo kasi galing sa inyo ‘yan. Pera ‘yan ng taumbayan. Pero iboto mo kung ano ang nasa konsiyensiya mo,” Robredo said.

But Jimenez countered Robredo’s statement.

“I disagree with the notion of taking the money and voting according to your conscience. Vote buying is an election offense regardless of financial situation or noble intentions,” he said.

“Di dapat ginagawa, at di dapat sina-suggest yan sa mga botante,” he added.

Under Omnibus Election Code, vote buying and vote selling are considered as election offense.
