Citizens of Taguig participate in the metrowide shake drill on Wednesday morning.
TAGUIG CITY, Philippines — Various scenarios for this year’s metrowide shake drill were simulated today in Taguig City which the local government says has been successfully conducted.
Among the scenarios simulated were the collapse of a portion of city hall, attempted escape of prisoners, fire at a public school and looting at a nearby shopping center.
About 2, 000 participants joined the simulation including the private sector.
Mayor Lani Cayetano said, cooperation among the participants was succesful. Rescuers responded quickly to those injured in the simulated scenarios.
“The drill was successful because the stakeholders have cooperated well. Other government agencies also participated well in this drill like the PNP, Bureau of Fire and DepEd,” Cayetano said.
Though the drill was considered successful, the challenge on encouraging residents to seriously participate still remains, according to the local government.
mayor cayetano said, some of the participants do not seem to take the drill seriously.
Until now, you can observe that though they are participating, some of them cooperate just for compliance.
The challenge is how to convince them and to change their frame of mind to take seriously the dangers of calamities.
Cayetano also said that they will further intensify their information dissemination to instill in residents the importance of shake drills especially since parts of Taguig City are located on the fault line.
“That’s what we will try to intensify. That every household and families has a deep understanding and knowledge of drills like this one. The local government also ensures that plans are already in place to provide immediate response in case ‘The Big One’ hits the city.
MANILA, Philippines – Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, who also serves as the chairman of the National Task Force on COVID-19, on Monday expressed confidence that the National Capital Region (NCR) will be placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) after August 18.
Lorenzana said that recent data on COVID-19 cases show that Metro Manila is ready to loosen its coronavirus lockdown after its two-week return to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) restriction.
He said the trend is “going down” after the Department of Health reported around 3,000 additional cases on Sunday.
Lorenzana said this number is lower compared to the 6,000 increase in recent days.
Metro Manila, as well as Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite and Rizal were placed under MECQ until August 18 after medical workers appealed for a “timeout” amid rising COVID-19 cases.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año also expressed optimism that the re-imposition of a stricter quarantine measure, coupled with the observance of health protocols, will slow down the transmission of coronavirus disease in the country
“Titingnan natin yung figures pero ako, I am optimistic na with the 15 days MECQ, bababa yan. Ang kailangan lang ay sumunod. Huwag na tayong maging pasaway, stay at home,” he said.
He also reiterated his appeal to the public to be responsible and strictly follow advise to only leave their homes for essential needs.
“With 15 days staying at home marami tayong virus diyan na mapapatay kasi incubation period or 14 days talaga namang mamamatay yung virus. So please do your partnering,” he said. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Lea Ylagan)
