CAVITE, Philippines — A dump truck crashed Thursday afternoon along Emilio Aguinaldo Highway in Dasmariñas City, Cavite killing one and injuring 9 others.

Police report said the truck driver, identified as Marlon Melgar, was plying the highway when he lost control of the truck after the brakes failed to work.

Dasmariñas CPS Chief of Police, PSupt Nerwin Ricohermoso said, “May karga siya na mga graba materials for construction and then all of a sudden nagbump siya sa may center island namin papunta dun sa gilid and then nag loose na yung kanyang brake and then natanggal na yung dalawang gulong sa likod.”

The out of control truck rammed into nine more vehicles including a motorcycle before falling on its side in Barangay Sampaloc Uno.

The motorcycle rider, identified as Ramon Joseph Magracia, slid under the truck. He was brought to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Nine people were also wounded in the incident and brought to the hospital for medical attention.

The accident, which almost occupied both lanes of the highway, resulted in heavy traffic that authorities were only able to clear around 9:00 p.m. after hauling away the truck and other affected vehicles.

The owner of the dump truck expressed willingness to extend financial assistance to cover damages while the driver is expected to face a number of charges.

“So the driver is under our custody and he will be facing reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, and another one is serious physical injury & serious injury and damage to property & damage to government property kasi may mga structures, maraming structures din ang nasira. Yung mga center islands natin yung tinamaan and then medyo yung portion ng highway, yung roads natin and yung sidewalks is medyo nagkaroon din ng damage,” Ricohermoso said. — Benedict Samson

Investigators to examine key components of wrecked seaplane

by UNTV News   |   Posted on Thursday, January 4th, 2018

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau told reporters in a news conference on Thursday that they are “confident” a thorough examination of the seaplane’s key components will be done, to understand whether they were operating correctly at the time of the crash.

“So, in terms of the state of the aircraft, we are reasonably confident that we will be able to do a thorough examination of the key components of the aircraft, to understand whether they were operating correctly at the time,” said Australian Transport Safety Bureau Executive Director Nat Nagy.

Australian air crash investigators and police on Thursday hoisted the wreckage of a seaplane from the Sydney river where it sank after crashing on New Year’s Eve, killing six people.

“And then over the course of the next twelve months, we will complete a report that will aim to find out exactly what went wrong, with the goal of improving safety and preventing an accident like this happening again in the future,” said the executive director.

Richard Cousins and four members of his family were among the six fatalities, according to police.

The family was on a short tourist flight, operated by Sydney Seaplanes, from a waterfront restaurant on the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney, to Rose Bay in the city’s east.

The plane’s pilot, Gareth Morgan, 44, was also killed in the crash. — Reuters
