Technology provider Smartmatic insists that there is no need to prohibit their officials from leaving the Philippines because they have no plans of going out of the country yet.
This comes after COMELEC Commissioner Rowena Guanzon issued a memorandum requesting the en banc of the commission to direct the officials and employees of Smartmatic to remain in the country while investigations on the script or program alteration of the transparency server is ongoing.
Smartmatic’s spokesperson Atty. Karen Jimeno said the officials of the company will participate in any investigation that will be launched.
“Smartmatic respect the memorandum of Commissioner Rowena Guanzon but we also think its unnecessary because the officials of Smartmatic has no plans of leaving, they intend to fully cooperate with whatever investigation that COMELEC calls for or any political party calls for,” Jimeno said.
On the allegation that there was a breach in protocol, Jimeno asks if there really exists a protocol for minor changes like typographical errors.
And if there really is one, what are the corresponding penalties for such violations?
Jimeno emphasized that Smartmatic’s Project Manager Marlon Garcia made the correction to the program of the transparency server in the presence of an officer from the COMELEC’s Information Technology Department.
“On the day the typographical error was corrected a COMELEC ITD officer was also present and in fact it was the COMELEC officer that type in the password in order for Smartmatic to do the change,” explained Atty. Jimeno.
Smartmatic asserted that from the start, they have abided by the guidelines set forth by the poll body.
Meanwhile Commissioner Guanzon said the investigation will start once they have finished canvassing the votes for senators and partylist.
Guanzon for her part said she is studying the possibility of blacklisting Smartmatic from future dealings with the commission.
