MANILA, Philippines – Senator Pia Cayetano expressed concern that children might mistake alcoholic beverages for fruit juices because of misleading packaging.
According to Cayetano, ‘alcopops’ or flavored alcoholic beverages come in colorful packaging with varied alcoholic content even as high as 7%.
The senator said they are usually displayed in store shelves next to ordinary juice drinks.
Cayetano has asked manufacturers to recall such items from stores and change the package designs.
“Lahat naman tayo nag-go-grocery. Nasama diyan ang alcopops, makulay, (We all go to the grocery and there we could find alcopops in colorful packaging,)” Cayetano said.
“Iyong kahera, you think, madi-distinguish niya na alcopops ito? (Do you think the cashier would distinguish that (this) is alcopop?)” she added while showing some items in her hands.
Steven Cua, for his part, said he does not allow alcopops in doypacks. He argued, however, that he cannot order their members to recall such products from the store shelves because there is no existing law that restricts them.
“Free enterprise tayo. We carry what the market wants. Again, as long as it is not legal or illicit,” Cua, the President of Philippine Amalgamated Association, said.
Cayetano first opened the issue during a hearing of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means on the proposed increase in taxes on liquor and tobacco products.
Senator Cayetano is planning to invite the manufacturers of alcopops in the country to give them the chance to explain their side on the issue. – MNP (with details from Grace Casin)
