Ricky Vargas has resigned from his post as president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

Vargas announced his resignation five months before the country is set to host the Southeast Asian Games and three weeks after firing his predecessor, Jose “Peping” Cojuangco and other members of the POC Board for convening and attending the executive board meetings behind his back.

“This is to inform the Executive Board of the Philippine Olympic Committee that I am tendering my irrevocable resignation from the post of President of the organization, effective immediately,” he said in a statement.

“After much introspection, I have determined that there would be other sports leaders who would have the time and inclination needed to lead the POC more effectively,” he added.

Vargas earlier complained about difficulty in heading the committee due to politics within.

He has asked POC Communications Director Patrick Gregorio to help ensure smooth transition of leadership for the incoming president.

“Rest assured, I will continue to support Philippine sports in my private capacity,” he said.
