MANILA, Philippines — This year’s Traslacion of the Black Nazarene moved faster than in previous years, according to authorities.

From the starting point at Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, devotees were able to cross and reach Ayala Bridge and Palanca Street for almost five hours only specifically from 4:00am to 7:00am.

This year, the Andas was escorted and surrounded by police personnel forming the so-called ‘andas wall’ to ensure the safety of devotees.

The police force was divided into sectors, each headed by a police colonel or lieutenant colonel managing their team.

Upon reaching Ayala Bridge, the police let the devotees take control of the procession up to Arlegui Street.

From there, the andas took Nepomuceno counter flow to Concepcion Aguila street then to Carcer Street until it reached Plaza del Carmen.

The andas also passed through Bilibid Viejo Street;
Gil Puyat;
P. De Guzman;
Hidalgo Street;
Quezon Boulevard;
Palangca Street;
Quezom Bridge;
Villalobos Street;
and Plaza Miranda to its destination in Quiapo Church.

Several devotees, however, complained why the plan did not let the andas pass through the underpass in Quezon Bridge.

Authorities blocked the said underpass with a barricade.

“All areas were closed. They said we cannot cross there,” said a devotee from Cavite, Vivencio Agumbay.

“The road is closed even that passage at the side of the church,” lamented Danding Santos from Bulacan.

Several road closures annoyed devotees who were eager to see the Andas.

Some of them tried to knock down the barricade at the Quezon Bridge underpass.

They even attacked and broke the windshield of a police vehicle.

Despite the aggression, the police personnel remained calm and exercised maximum tolerance in dispersing the devotees. – MNP (with reports from Correspondent Vincent Arboleda)

Police arrested four alleged suspects in the shooting of Batuan, Masbate town Vice Mayor Charlie Yuson III on Wednesday (October 9) evening.

Yuson was shot while having a meal at a canteen on V.G. Cruz Street in Sampaloc, Manila on Wednesday morning.

Authorities immediately conducted pursuit operations and arrested the four individuals.

Yuson’s relatives immediately went to the police station to confirm the identities of the alleged suspects.

Charliemagne Yuson, one of the victim’s relatives, said the killing may be related to politics.

He also mentioned Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office Director Sandra Cam to be involved in the incident.

“Alam namin, pulitika ang dahilan ng lahat ng ito. Walang ibang gagawa niyan kundi si Sandra Cam tsaka ang anak niya na si Marco Martin Cam kasi sila lang ang may dahilan at rason para patayin ang aming tiyuhin (We know politics is involved. No one will commit it but Sandra Cam and her son, Marco Martin Cam because they have the reason to kill our uncle),” he said.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Cam denied the said allegations against her and her son.

“I have nothing to do with the ambush,” said Cam. “It is so unfair that our family is being dragged into this, we’ve moved on from that election.”

The Manila Police District has yet to release an update on the case including the identities of the alleged suspects.—AAC (with reports from Asher Cadapan Jr.)
