The Quezon City local government will ramp up its distribution of bicycle helmets to riders before enforcing ordinance requiring bikers traversing the city to wear safety headgears.

Around 200 free helmets were distributed on Thursday (October 15) and will distribute 100 more in the next coming days.

QC Mayor Joy Belmonte said the implementation of Ordinance No. SP-2942 was scheduled on Friday (October 16) but it was rescheduled to next month to give riders enough time to comply.

“We will continue the distribution of free helmets as consideration to those who still don’t have one,” she said.

Violators of the ordinance will face fines of 300, P500 and P1,000 for the first, second and third offenses, respectively.  It was originally set to P1,000, P3,000 and P5,000 but was lowered due to the request of Belmonte.

Before the official implementation, the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) will issue warnings and conduct information dissemination to riders who will be caught not wearing a helmet. AAC
