Legazpi, ALBAY — President Rodrigo Duterte has seen the congestion in evacuation centers in Albay.
For this reason, Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs, Francis Tolentino has received an order from the President to build a permanent evacuation center in the province.
The instruction was given at the Cabinet meeting last Monday.
“There was an instruction given to the National Housing Authority to develop a prototype of a permanent evacuation center,” said Tolentino.
When the plan pushes through, it will benefit all the municipalities directly affected by the eruption of Mt. Mayon.
Tabaco City Mayor Krisel Lagman-Luistro said that students will not be displaced anymore.
“We see that it is one of the best solutions to avoid actually displacement of learners during calamities,” said Luistro.
Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal plans to build the permanent evacuation center in a 20-hectare lot outside the city that he plans to purchase.
Mayor Rosal estimated that there are more than 4,000 families affected every time Mt. Mayon erupts.
“Pag-aaralan ko collapsible na in times of calamity saka lang natin ikakabit. Iyan ang maganda nating gawin,” said Rosal.
( Translation: I’m looking at a collapsible wherein it will be set up only during times of calamity. That is the best thing we can do.)
Currently, there are only more than 70,000 individuals staying in the evacuation centers.
This is after the provincial government sent home all those living beyond the extended 8-kilometer danger zone from the Mayon Volcano. — Mon Jocson | UNTV News & Rescue
