President Rodrigo Duterte met with Chinese Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan at Malacañang on Tuesday.

In a speech at a Department of Agriculture event held at the Malacañang, the Chief Executive stated some topics he and the Chinese Minister discussed in their meeting, including the billion-dollar joint projects between China and the Philippines.

“He just brought in [How much is that again?] One billion dollars, agri-products.  They’re coming next month and they have scheduled something like 10 billion for the present — oh, the 10 billion dollars all-in-all, hopefully coming our way. It had to take the Minister of Commerce of China to tell us frankly that they are the ones in a hurry and ‘If you are ready with your plans and documents, we’ll be glad to come to you the next day’,” President Duterte said.

The President added that China committed aid for the victims of the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Surigao del Norte in February.

“I would like to thank again the Chinese government for aid…and even in Surigao.  They have allotted some funding for the rehabilitation of Surigao that was hit by the recent earthquake. One million dollars. That’s a big help. China is rich,” he said.

The President is confident that he is doing the right thing to bolster ties with China, which was dented due to the South China Sea dispute.

The Chief Executive added that this will be good primarily for the Philippine economy.

“And so I told him that I made the correct decision to follow just an independent neutral policy and pursue where our destiny would lie. I also told him that, you know, we are in Asia, far from the maddening crowd of Europe, it’s too far away the Western powers should be worrying about us. I said we are lucky here in Asia. And since China is the leading industrial power, we’ll have to ally with them in trade and commerce and eventually improve on the bilateral relations and come out with a vibrant economy.” he said.

On the other hand, President Duterte assured he will not forget the issue on the maritime dispute and further added that there will be a time when he would need to directly confront China regarding the issue. — Rosalie Coz | UNTV News and Rescue

Duterte invites Juan Ponce Enrile to discuss West Philippine Sea issue

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte will seek the counsel of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on issues surrounding the West Philippine Sea dispute.

In a taped speech aired on Friday, Duterte said he has invited Enrile to join his meeting with Cabinet officials on Monday, May 17, to discuss the Philippines’ territorial dispute with China.

“We have respectfully invited Senator Enrile to come here kasi hindi man ako puwedeng makalabas na mag-usap,” he said.

“Pakinggan natin siya. Huwag na tayong — hindi na ako magsalita. Makikinig lang ako sa kanya kasi siya ‘yong — he was there right at the beginning,” he added.

Duterte said he would be all ears if the former lawmaker and a shrewd lawyer were to discuss the West Philippine issue with him.

“Sa kanya ako makinig kasi sa kanya ako bilib sa utak at pag-intindi nitong problema itong ating West Philippine Sea,” he said.

The president expressed hope that the 97-year old Enrile would accept his invitation.

Duterte did not say his reasons for consulting Enrile on the matter, but the former senator had previously expressed support for the Duterte administration’s diplomatic way of dealing with the maritime dispute. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Rosalie Coz)

Philippine GDP declines by 4.2% in first quarter of 2021 – PSA

Robie de Guzman   •   May 11, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine economy shrank by more than expected in the first quarter of the year, according to government data released on Tuesday, as prolonged community quarantines due to the pandemic hamper reopening efforts.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell -4.2 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier.

This is the fifth consecutive quarter that the country has posted negative GDP growth due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The PSA said the main contributors to the decline were Construction (-24.2 percent), other Services, (-38.0 percent); and Real Estate and Ownership of Dwellings (-13.2 percent).

Among the major economic sectors, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing (AFF) declined by -1.2 percent in the first quarter of 2021. Likewise, Services and Industry contracted by -4.4 percent and -4.7 percent, respectively during the period, the PSA noted.

“On the demand side, Household Final Consumption Expenditure (HFCE) declined by -4.8 percent, along with the following items: Gross Capital Formation (GCF), -18.3 percent; Exports, -9.0 percent; and Imports, -8.3 percent,” the agency said.

The net primary income (NPI) from the rest of the world continued to decline by -75.8 percent, bringing the Gross National Income (GNI) to drop by -10.9 percent during the period, it added.

On the other hand, the PSA said that government final consumption expenditure (GFCE) grew by 16.1 percent in the first quarter of 2021.

Contributors to growth were led by financial and insurance activities (5.2 percent), public administration and defense, compulsory social activities (7.5 percent), and human health and social work activities (11.7 percent).

Other industries that managed to grow during the period were information and communication, 6.3 percent; manufacturing, 0.5 percent; and electricity, steam, water, and waste management, 1.9 percent, the PSA said.

The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) said the aversion to risk for most of 2020 has placed the country in a long period of quarantine, and that this came at a huge cost to the economy and the people.

It, however, observed some improvements as the rate of contraction has slowed, and that the country has time to catch up with on its growth target of 6.5 to 7.5 percent despite the pandemic-induced quarantine restrictions.
