The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) believe that proper coordination with local government units (LGUs) and sound economic programs will prevent citizens from being recruited by terrorist groups.

“Hindi lang naman PNP at AFP ang nagko-confront dito sa problema na ito (The AFP and the PNP are not the only ones that should confront this problem), it involves everyone all other government agencies, other sector of societies and the citizenry as a whole,” AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Gilbert Gapay said.

Meanwhile PNP Chief PGen. Camilo Cascolan said they will deploy units that will focus on hunting down local terrorists.

“They will be going down. They will be very very visible in all this insurgency areas and be able to come up with the public safety battalion. They will have their own force,” Cascolan said.

They will also monitor schools and social media as these are often used as recruitment grounds for terrorist groups. Gapay advised parents to also monitor their child’s online classes to make sure they are not visiting pages or sites used for recruitment.

“For all we know, nire-recruit na sila doon, nira-radicalized na sila doon, (they are being recruited or radicalized there)” Gapay said. AAC (with reports from Lea Ylagan)
