The Spanish Gardener: Sculpture of Pablo Picasso mowing grass (Reuters)
Famed artist Pablo Picasso is mowing a small plot of grass in Brooklyn, New York. Wearing sandals and his usual stripped shirt, a 10 foot (3 meters) sculpture of the artist is on display near the waterfront.
The sculpture is called “The Spanish Gardener”
New York-based sculptor Elliott Arkin created the irreverent, large garden gnome.
“It’s a visual poem,” Arkin told Reuters on Tuesday (June 19). “It’s a salutation of a common act and of the common man.”
Arkin said the sculpture is meant to be humorous and he encourages the art world not to take itself so seriously.
“If Pablo Picasso was around today he’d have to mow lawns for a living because the art world has changed,” he added.
“The Spanish Gardener” is derived from a series of smaller-scale sculptures Arkin completed a few years ago called “A Peaceable Kingdom.” In the series, Picasso was joined by other gardening artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent van Gogh, and Andy Warhol.
To display the lawn-mowing Picasso, Arkin teamed up with the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, a non-profit organization which takes care of the waterfront areas in Brooklyn. He said, “In many ways, it was a perfect fit to the idea to take care of this-this part of New York City in a caring and in an artful way.”
Arkin said it took about a year and a half to sculpt the figure. Picasso’s head is made of fiberglass. His body is a mix of aluminum and high-density urethane. The handle to his lawnmower was once a telephone pole.
The sculpture will be on view through mid-July. — Reuters
While the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continues to wreak havoc, the world is ever more appreciative and supportive of health workers frontlining the virus battle. Some express their support through music and donations — others through fine art.
A nurse paid tribute to her fellow frontliners and COVID-19 victims using syringe art.
Kimberly Joy Mallo Magbanua shared her masterpiece on Facebook: a health worker sleeping in exhaustion with the Philippine flag for a blanket.
“Ito’y para sa aking mga kapwang frontliners at sa lahat ng naging biktima ng COVID-19 (This is for my fellow frontliners and all the victims of COVID-19),” her post reads. AAC
The United Kingdom’s foremost modern and contemporary art museum, Tate Modern, has acquired three artworks from the late Ivatan artist Pacita Abad.
Abad is considered as one of the most important contemporary artists in the Philippines. Two of her artworks, acquired by the museum, is from a series entitled Bacongo while the third artwork is entitled European Mask.
Ambassador to the United Kingdom Antonio M. Lagdameo said this affirms that Philippine art is an important part of the international artistic canon.
“Tate Modern has one of the most extensive and diverse collections of artwork from all over the world and is one of the world’s most important contemporary art galleries,” according to the DFA.—AAC
