The Philippine Navy announced on Friday that its second missile-capable frigate was launched at sea for the first time during a ceremony held in Ulsan, South Korea.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Noel Clement, Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad and other officials witnessed the launching of BRP Antonio Luna at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Shipyard in Bangeojinsunhwan-doro.

The Philippine Navy said the frigate, which is named after one of the country’s national heroes, could be delivered in September or October 2020.

It added that the launch of BRP Antonio Luna completes its two-unit frigate acquisition project.

The first vessel, BRP Jose Rizal, was launched last May and is undergoing harbor trials. It is expected to be delivered in April or May 2020.

The navy said both ships are capable of engaging in the four dimensions of modern warfare, namely: Anti-Air Warfare (AAW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASUW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Electronic Warfare (EW).

These are also fully equipped with Surface to Surface Missiles (SSM), Surface to Air Missile (SAM), and Torpedoes.

The Philippine Navy believes the acquisition of these missile frigates will strengthen its capability to safeguard the country’s territorial limits.
