MANILA, Philippines — Dioceldo Sy of Ever Bilena Cosmetics Inc. and owner of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) team Black Water Elite has donated P50,000 to the PBA Legends Foundation Inc., in exchange for a framed, signed epic jersey of Atoy Co.
Fortunato “Atoy” Co, Jr was one of the star players of then Crispa Redmanizers, the arch-rival of Toyota Super Diesels in the 1970s up to the early part of the 1980s.
Co wore the yellow Crispa jersey back in the PBA 1981 season when the Redmanizers won the Reinforced All Filipino Conference, the height of the Crispa-Toyota rivalry.
Atoy’s most prolific game that season was on July 7, 1981 when he scored 35 points in a 133-118 victory over Toyota.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation strives to continue helping its members. Last April, it launched its collectible jersey project which was aimed at raising funds to continue helping PBA veterans during the difficult times brought by the crisis.
It was in this project that Sy saw Atoy’s jersey and subsequently pledged P50,000 to the Foundation in exchange for it.
Co, who chairs the PBA Legends Foundation, personally delivered the framed jersey to Sy’s office and received the donation of the latter in a simple exchange on Friday, May 28.
The PBA Legends Foundation, Inc. was created in 2017 with the seed money of P1-million donated by UNTV’s Kuya Daniel Razon that paved the way for the Foundation to reach out to and link with former PBA players who have automatically become its members. —/mbmf
MANILA, Philippines — The government’s task force for COVID-19 response has green-lighted the request of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to hold scrimmages and team practices in areas under the general community quarantine (GCQ) and modified GCQ, Malacañang announced Friday.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, however, stressed that this is subject to health and safety protocols and vetting of Games and Amusement Board.
“Pinayagan ng IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force) ang mga scrimmages at practices ng Philippine Basketball Association sa mga lugar na general community quarantine at MGCQ subject to the health and safety protocols na pag-aaralan muna ng Games and Amusement Board,” Roque said in an online briefing.
The local government of Batangas City earlier agreed to host the team practices of the Philippine Basketball Association in certain local venues. Batangas City is under GCQ until May 31.
Roque also announced that the IATF likewise approved the request of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to host the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup Qualifiers in June 2021 in Clark, Pampanga.
Roque said this activity will be held under a “bubble-type” setting and subject to health and safety protocols.
“The testing and quarantine protocols of arriving foreign participants shall be subject to the FIBA-required protocols as presented, to the extent applicable, without prejudice to the entry travel restrictions,” stated Resolution 114 issued by the IATF-EID on Thursday.
The resolution also said that all non-player participants not covered by FIBA rules are mandated to self-isolate upon arrival in the venue and undertake RT-PCR testing on the sixth day before their release.
“The designated hotels within the bubble shall not accept other guests outside of the FIBA participants,” the resolution read.
As the national government agency with the visitorial and supervisory authority, the Philippine Sports Commission has been directed by the IATF to “assume responsibility for monitoring and supervising the compliance of the health and safety protocols of the event.

The PBA Legends Foundation will provide financial assistance including medical help to former PBA players. The foundation can also grant assistance for the education of their children.
PBA Board Vice Chairman Dickie Bachman has vowed to support former players. The PBA has also authorized the foundation to use the PBA name and logo.
“We are basically glad that finally now we get organized with the PBA Legend Foundation Inc., and moving forward will support the past PBA players,” he said.
Meanwhile, UNTV Cup Commissioner and PBA Legends Foundation Chairman Fortunato Atoy Co is excited about upcoming projects to raise funds for the foundation.
“Ako po ay malugod na nagpapasalamat sa PBA, kay Commissioner Willie Marcial, kay Dicky Bachman. Pinayagan na rin kami ng PBA na gamitin iyong lumang logo noong panahong naglalaro pa kami, (I am humbly thankful to PBA, to Commissioner Willie Marcial, Dicky Bachman. They also allowed us to use the old PBA logo that was used during our time),” Co said.
Former PBA legends are elated with the news. Ronnie Magsanoc hopes that this will be the beginning of new projects between PBA and the PBA Legend Foundation.
“Ito iyong hudyat ng belief ng tamang pagkakaisa between the league and the players. Sana mabuksan pa ng maraming proyekto, (This marks the belief of proper unity between the league and the players. I hope this opens more projects),” Magsanoc said.
One of the board of directors, Allan ‘The Triggerman’ Caidic hopes that this will also encourage active players to participate in the foundation’s upcoming projects.
“I hope someday we can link the present PBA players, iyong mga active players to join and help this cause. Kasi in the future magbe-benefit rin sila dito. So thank you again sa support ng lahat para mabuo ito, UNTV Group, Kuya Daniel Razon and siyempre mga PBA team, salamat po (Because they will also benefit from this cause in the future. So again, thank you for the support of everyone who made this happen: the UNTV group, Kuya Daniel Razon and of course the PBA team. Thank you),” he said.—AAC (with reports from Bernard Dadis)
