It’s not what everyone thought it was. A scene that looked like an attempted robbery, turned out to be a different story.
The man in the viral video, who was later identified as Jomar, was seen clinging outside a moving jeepney while reaching inside the vehicle trying to punch someone.
After seeing the video, netizens slammed Jomar for his actions and immediately alerted the Manila government.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso invited those involved in the incident, and Manila Police District Director Bgen. Bernabe Balba, to a press conference where it became clear that the scene was sparked by a personal feud.
Jomar allegedly was only helping his friend, Edison, whose wife got harassed by a man inside the jeepney along Taft Avenue last Sunday (November 17) afternoon.
Edison said they chased the man after he tried to escape.
“Nagtangka po siyang tumakas kaya sinugod na namin sa jeep (He tried to escape so we followed him inside the jeepney),” he said.
“Inunahan niya po kasi ako ng suntok kaya sinundan ko na rin ng suntok (He threw the first punch, so I punched him back)” Edison added.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso lauded the Manila Police District for their quick response to the incident. He also reminded Jomar and Edison to always trust the government in providing justice.
“Huwag niyong ilalagay sa kamay ninyo ang batas. Sumangguni kayo sa kapulisyahan, (Don’t put the law into your own hands. Trust the police),” he said.
“Sana muli ninyong pagkatiwalaan ang pulis at ang pamahalaan na magbibigay ng hustisya kapag kayo naagrabyado, (I hope you can again trust the police and the government in providing justice when an abuse is committed),” he added.—AAC
A children advocacy group warned against the dangers of participating in trending photo challenges on social media.
Save the Children Philippines CEO Atty. Alberto Muyot said cyber criminals target photos and videos of children online to sell them or upload on pedophile sites.
“Mayroon nga pong mga samples na nagpapakita ng photo ng kanilang anak na bata nililIguan and then suddenly kumalat na iyon doon sa sites ng mga pedophiles as part ng sex trafficking ng mga bata, child pornography, (There were instances where they uploaded a photo of their child bathing and then suddenly it became viral in pedophile sites as part of child sex trafficking, child pornography),” he said.
Muyot also lamented that the Philippines has become the center of online sexual exploitation of children in the world. Based on the data of the Department of Justice (DOJ) Cybercrime Division, the number of sexual images of Filipino children in social media sites increased from 45,645 in 2017 to around 600,000 in 2019.
“We are sure na ngayong na babad na babad po ang mga bata, mga tao, adults, doon po sa internet at tataas pa po iyong numbers (We are sure that the number would further increase given that children and adults these days are spending more time online),” Muyot said.
Authorities advise the public to immediately report any information regarding cybercrime activities to the following:
The Mayor also said the testing center is open to all Manileños and non-Manileños.
“Kahit sino, puwede magpa-test dito. Kahit hindi taga-Maynila (Anyone can be tested here even if you’re not a Manila resident). [The COVID-19 pandemic] is a universal problem. We have to approach it inclusively. That is why this is open to all and for free,” he said.
Domagoso added that another swab testing laboratory will be opened by the Manila City government. AAC
MANILA, Philippines – The suspect in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a nurse in Manila has surrendered to authorities, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said Thursday.
The Manila Police identified the suspect as Mohamad Ali Sulaiman. He is the brother of Sauda Bacaye who claimed to be the owner of the black Mitsubishi pick-up that hit nurse Renz Jayson Perez on the night of August 23.
Sulaiman was accompanied by his sister together with lawyer William Delos Santos and Metro Manila Muslim Community for Justice and Peace chairman Datu Basher “Bong” Alonto when he met with Mayor Isko in his office on Thursday afternoon.
Sulaiman asked for forgiveness from Perez’s family as he admitted that he was driving the vehicle involved in the incident.
The Manila City Mayor assured the Perez’s family, Sulaiman and the public of due process as the suspect will face charges for reckless imprudence resulting into homicide.
“Ang hustisya naman ay nakapiring. Mabibigyan ka ng pagkakataon na makapagpaliwanag sa mata ng batas. Ikaw naman ay may abogado,” Domagoso told Sulaiman.
“Maraming salamat sa’yo at luminaw ang isipan mo na harapin na lamang kung ano ang magiging ending o magiging hatol sa’yo ng pagkakataon,” the Mayor said.
Mayor Isko also asked Bacaye to take responsibility even if she was not the one who drove the vehicle during the incident.
“Mayroon lang akong pakiusap doon sa may-ari ng sasakyan. Maging takdang aral sa atin ito sa pagpapahiram ng sasakyan, dahil I think your lawyer will agree with me that there is some level of responsibility as the owner,” he said.
“Ang pakiusap ko lang kung pupwede, sana matulungan niyo yung pamilya ng naulila. ‘Yun ang pakiusap ko sa inyo. ‘Yung hustisya naman kakaharapin naman ni (Solaiman) iyon,” he added.
