The provincial board has placed the second district of Pampanga under state of calamity following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake on Monday (April 22).
The province’s second district covers towns of Porac, Floridablanca, Guagua, Sasmuan, Lubao, and Sta. Rita.
According to the statement of Vice Governor Dennis Pineda, presiding officer of the provincial board, declaring a state of calamity in the area will help in rebuilding the community after the strong earthquake.
Pineda has also recommended the temporarily closure of Chuzon Supermarket’s other branches in Pampanga for structural assessment.
This was after a Chuzon Supermarket located in a 4-storey building collapsed during Monday’s earthquake. Four were killed while eight were injured.
Rescuers continue to look for survivors still trapped in the rubble.
“We cannot account for all the more than 90 Chuzon workers. We have no information if they managed to run to safety or if they were trapped in the rubble. We advised the management to make the survivors or their relatives report their situation until a full accounting of people is done,” Pineda said. — Aileen Cerrudo
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Central Luzon Regional Office has arrested two Chinese nationals for operating an underground clinic and pharmacy in Angeles, Pampanga.
Authorities raided an underground medical clinic and pharmacy on Volga Street in Barangay Anunas on Thursday (May 28).
The arrested Chinese nationals were identified as 66-year-old Chen Zheng Zhong and 33-year-old son Chen Hai Fang. Chen Zheng Zhong is the doctor treating Chinese patients while his son sells illegal Chinese medicines.
According to the NBI, the suspects used a two-storey apartment as their underground clinic and pharmacy.
“Hindi mo talaga iisipin na mayroong clinic doon sa loob kasi isang apartment lang, (You wouldn’t think that there is a clinic inside because it’s only an apartment),” according to NBI Regional Office 3 Operations Officer Atty. Marvin de Jemil.
“Wala silang permit from the FDA [Food and Drug Administration], and then naghahanap din kami ng business permit, wala din silang permit. Wala rin silang license to operate (They don’ have a permit from the FDA, nor a business permit. They also don’t have a license to operate),” Jemil added.
Upon inspection of the NBI and the FDA, they found six hospital-like beds, two beds on the first floor and four more beds on the second floor of the building.
The two suspects are now detained at the NBI regional Office at City of San Fernando, Pampanga and are facing several charges including the violation of the Medical Act of 1959.AAC (with reports from Leslie Huidem)
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday (April 7) declared a state of emergency to fight new coronavirus infections in major population centres and unveiled a stimulus package he described as among the world’s biggest to soften the economic blow.
The state of emergency, giving authorities more power to press people to stay at home and businesses to close, will last through May 6 and be imposed in the capital, Tokyo, and six other prefectures – accounting for about 44% of Japan’s population.
“The most important thing is to change people’s actions,” Abe said in televised comments made at a meeting of a government task force.
Abe will speak at a news conference later tonight to explain to the citizens what the emergency declaration means for the people to get consent from the public. (Reuters)
