Malacañang defended President Rodrigo Duterte’s loose tie was not intended to disrespect Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev during their meeting on Wednesday (October 2).

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the president dresses up for comfort.

“He loosened it up. He feels suffocated and very uncomfortable if the tie is tightly in place in the collar,” he said.

“His loosened tie was not intended to disrespect the Russian Prime Minister or the Russian people. PRRD dresses up for comfort, he is not particular on unsettling other people. He is upfront on everything he does,” he added.

A journalist from the Czech Republic, Pavel Vondra, has posted a photo of President Duterte shaking hands with Russian Prime Minister Medvedev and commented about the Philippine President’s ‘unkempt’ tie.

“Rodrigo #Duterte showed up a bit unkempt for the meeting with the Russian PM Medvedev in Moscow and the Russian internet is having a blast: ‘Did he drink all night? Did he just leave the pub? Do Filipinos know what a (state visit) protocol is? people ask. #DuterteinRussia,” according to his Twitter post.—AAC (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
