“The solution is simple: require all those who comment on online publications, online platforms, to reveal their real identity. If you are from China state your name, state your country of residence,” ani Carpio.

“Because if you put your real name you will be circumspect, you will weigh every word you put there because you could be sued for libel or you could be laughed up if you express something ridiculous,” ani Carpio.

1Sambayan to reveal line-up of candidates in the 2022 polls in September

MANILA, Philippines — Opposition group 1Sambayan hinted at revealing its line-up of candidates for the 2022 National Elections in September.

According to Retired Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, they are now in the process of completing the names to be included in their line-up of candidates.

“We are very inclusive, that’s why up to now we’re trying to form a bigger coalition,” Carpio said.

The former magistrate said 1Sambayan Coalition is strengthening its group by entering into an alliance with other organizations to match the ruling party of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The group initially invited Vice President Leni Robredo to run as president on their side.

Likewise, they asked other popular names like former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Atty. Chel Diokno, Senator Grace Poe, Congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto, and Congressman Eddie Villanueva.

Poe, Diokno, and Recto already turned down the offer.

Yet, the 1Sambayan Coalition believes there is a chance for the opposition to stand out and defeat the administration lineup.

Carpio said among those whom they invited in the coalition was Senator Ping Lacson, who already announced his bid for the 2022 national elections, though he declined their invitation.

As a prior assessment of what to expect in next year’s polls, the group said Lacson will definitely divide the administration’s expected votes.

“Sa tingin po natin, with the solid opposition, mahahati lang po nila ang boto ng administrasyon,” noted Howard Calleja, the group’s convenor. MNP (with reports from Rey Pelayo)

Opposition open to alliances; must go beyond anti-Duterte platform in 2022 polls – Drilon

Robie de Guzman   •   June 16, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon on Wednesday said the opposition group “must go beyond an anti-Duterte platform” in next year’s elections.

“The opposition must go beyond an anti-Duterte platform. The opposition must present a platform, which says that we can do better in the pandemic response because this is where the errors are committed and this is what we are going to do,” Drilon said in a television interview.

When asked to comment on observations that there is no one strong opposition candidate at this point, the senator said that having one opposition candidate is “desirable” but admits to it being a “very difficult task.”

“… [I]t is desirable to have one opposition candidate. That is what the 1Sambayan is trying to do. That is a very difficult task. They have taken upon themselves that difficult task. We support their effort,” he said.

“We do hope that the opposition can come up with only one candidate. As in any election in the past, the administration would always have the advantage. We must exert every effort to have one candidate to oppose the administration candidate,” he added.

Last week, political coalition 1Sambayan revealed their list of presidential and vice-presidential nominees. The list includes Vice President Leni Robredo, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos, Senator Grace Poe, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, and CIBAC party-list Representative Eddie Villanueva.

If Robredo decides not to run in 2022 polls, Drilon, who sits as Liberal Party vice chairperson, said the Liberal Party is open to alliances.

“That is the reality of politics today. As we said, we should only have one candidate. We cross our fingers that VP Robredo will decide to run for president and we believe she is the strongest and, hopefully, she can unite all the non-Duterte candidates,” he said.

“If she does not run for the presidency, then the LP will have to meet and see where we will go from there,” he added.

1Sambayan on nominees for 2022 Polls: ‘No expectations of firm decisions’ yet

Marje Pelayo   •   June 14, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — The opposition coalition 1Sambayan has named its nominees for the 2022 presidential and vice-presidential elections.

On Saturday (June 12), the coalition released their list of nominees which included Vice President Leni Robredo, Senator Grace Poe, Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto, CIBAC party-list Rep. Eddie Villanueva, former Senator Antonio Trillanes, and Atty. Chel Diokno.

On its Facebook post on Sunday, however, the coalition said it is not expecting the nominees to have ‘firm decisions’ yet to run for any specific positions in the 2022 polls.

“There are no expectations of firm decisions to run for specific positions at this point in time. The fact is no one –- not even the administration ‘anointed ones’ — have openly declared their ambitions for public office, even as some have already embarked on ad campaigns,” said 1Sambayan.

1Sambayan said it would support whatever the decisions of its nominees in the upcoming polls.

“1Sambayan supports our nominees’ desire to think, weigh, and discern if it is truly their personal mission to be in positions of power. It is not an easy decision to make. After all, true servant leadership is a challenging vocation,” it said.

Senator Poe, on Saturday, rejected their nominations saying she has no plans to run for higher office next year.

“Wala akong planong tumakbo sa pagkapangulo sa darating na eleskyon. Sa abot ng aking makakaya bilang senador, nais kong pagtuonan ng atensyon ang pag-ahon ng ating mga kababayan mula sa pandemyang ito,” she said.

Deputy Speaker and 6th District of Batangas Rep. Vilma-Santos Recto, likewise, turned down the nomination.
In a tweet, Recto said she is now focused on assisting Lipa City in its vaccination.

“Furthermore, I have legislative duties to attend to,” she noted.

Meanwhile, both Trillanes and Diokno in their statements neither accepted nor rejected the nomination.

“Isang malaking karangalan na maisama sa mga pagpipilian ng 1sambayan coalition pra sa pagka-presidente ng bansa. Nagtitiwala kami sa wisdom ng mga convenors ng 1sambayan at naniniwala kami na ito ang tanging vehicle tungo sa pgpanalo ng oposisyon sa 2022,” Trillanes said.

“I am very honored by the nomination, although I never aspired for those positions. Right now, I am focused on my Free Legal Helpdesk, and I hope to serve our country, especially the youth and the ordinary Filipino, in justice, accountability, and relief from the pandemic,” Diokno noted.
