(UNTV News)

PNP Academy chief relieved from post over alleged hazing death of cadet

Robie de Guzman   •   September 27, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – The chief of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) has been ordered relieved from post following an alleged hazing incident that led to the death of a cadet.

PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said he has approved the designation of Police Major General Alex Sampaga as the new PNPA director.

Sampaga will replace Police Major General Rhoderick Armamento, who will take over his current position at the PNP Directorate for Information and Communication Technology at Camp Crame.

Sampaga’s new designation will take effect on Sept. 29, Eleazar said.

“As a PNPA alumnus himself, I expect PMGen Sampaga to bring in innovative ideas and fresh perspective that would effectively implement the necessary adjustments in further improving the institution for each cadet to live up to its core values of justice, integrity, and service,” he said.

This development follows the death of Cadet Third Class Karl Magsayo last Thursday after he was allegedly punched several times by his upperclassman, Cadet Second Class Steve Caesar Maingat following an altercation.

Magsayo lost consciousness and was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Eleazar said a criminal case will be filed against Maingat in connection with Magsayo’s demise.

“This is separate from the administrative cases that would be filed against him which I assure to be the grounds for his dismissal from the Academy,” he said.

“Let this serve as a stern warning to all the PNPA cadets that the PNP leadership will never tolerate this misbehavior and serious breach of discipline and moral values,” he added.

Intel officer shot dead in Albay

A police officer assigned as an intelligence warrant officer of the Guinobatan Municipal Police Station was killed by still unidentified gunmen, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.

PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said the police officer, identified as Police Staff Sergeant Allan Madelar, was gunned down in Barangay Peñafrancia where he attended a birthday party on Saturday night.

Eleazar said he has ordered the Police Regional Police Office 5 to immediately resolve Madelar’s killing.

Eleazar appealed to those who witnessed the incident to come forward and help authorities in shedding light on the incident.

The PNP chief also expressed his condolences to the family of Madelar as he vowed that all necessary assistance would be provided to Madelar’s bereaved family.

PNP chief orders cops to ensure orderly voter’s registration as deadline nears

Robie de Guzman   •   September 24, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar on Friday directed police personnel to ensure the implementation of peace and order, and public health protocols in various sites as the deadline for the voter’s registration nears.

Eleazar issued the directive following reports of crowding and long lines in registration sites with only one week left before the registration closes.

He said police commanders should deploy enough number of personnel in various COMELEC registration sites to ensure the peaceful conduct of registration amid the threat of COVID-19.

Local police offices and units should also coordinate with local government units for the assistance they could provide once deployed in various registration sites.

The voter’s registration for the 2022 national and local elections is set to end on Sept. 30.

There have been calls and bills filed before the Congress to extend it until October, but the Comelec has yet to decide on the matter.
