MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Friday issued several reminders following the IATF’s decision to place the National Capital Region (NCR) and Laguna under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from August 21 to 31.

The agency said it is maintaining the ‘No Disconnection’ policy for customers with unpaid bills in MECQ areas.

Meralco said its #UsapTayo service via its online channels is available 24/7. Through the said online service, customers will be able to consult with Meralco representatives on the payment terms for their unpaid bills.

The electric company reiterates that the customers’ safety and convenience are its top priority.  It encourages the public to just stay home and pay bills online via its authorized payment partners: http://www.meralco.com.ph/paymentoptions.

Meralco also advised the public to check first on its website and social media regarding the operating hours of Meralco business centers to avoid inconveniences and long lines once the MECQ is lifted.

Power rates slightly up in October

Aileen Cerrudo   •   October 8, 2021

MANILA, Philippines—Power distributor Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) on Friday announced a slight increase in power rates for October.

In a statement, Meralco said the overall rate for a typical household inched up by only P0.0283 per kWh. This is equivalent to an increase of only around P6 in the total bill of a residential customer consuming 200 kWh.

The electric company explained that the power rate hike is due to the increase in transmission costs and other charges.

Meanwhile, Meralco reiterated that its disconnection activities remain suspended in Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Lucena City in Quezon, which are still under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ), from October 1 to 15. AAC

Meralco announces at least P21 increase in September bill

Marje Pelayo   •   September 15, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Power distributor Meralco announced on Wednesday (September 15) that electricity rates this month of September have slightly increased due to higher generation charges.

Meralco said this month’s rates will increase by P0.11 per kilowatt-hour.

This is equivalent to a Php 21 increase in the total September bill of the majority of homes consuming 200 kWh.

Meralco made the announcement of the power rate increase despite a previous appeal from the House of Representatives to waive such additional charges as it would add yet another burden to consumers given the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Power outages reported in parts of Batangas, Laguna, Cavite due to ‘Jolina’ – Meralco

Robie de Guzman   •   September 8, 2021

Parts of the provinces of Batangas, Laguna, and Cavite have experienced power outages due to the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm ‘Jolina’, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Wednesday said.

In an advisory, Meralco said the outages occurred in the southern part of its franchise.

“As of 12 noon, the weather disturbance still affected around 270,000 customers. Majority of these are from the provinces of Batangas, Laguna, and Cavite,” said Joe Zaldarriaga, vice president for Meralco Corporate Communications.

Meralco also reported that around 500,000 of its customers were affected by an earlier automatic load dropping (ALD) when 730MW of capacity from San Lorenzo, San Gabriel, and Avion natural gas power plants were isolated due to the tripping of NGCP’s Batangas-Makban line.

“The power interruption lasted for 11 minutes and all affected circuits were restored by 11:10am,” the power distributor said.

Zaldarriaga assured that their crews will continue to work 24/7 to immediately restore power in affected areas.
