SARANGANI PROVINCE, Philippines — Nagsimula na nitong Lunes, Hulyo 2 ang exercises ng Philippine at US Navy sa Sarangani.

Dumating noong araw ng Linggo ang dalawang US Navy ships para sa “Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training o CARAT 2012 na tatagal hanggang Hulyo 10.

Layon ng CARAT 12 na pag-ibayuhin pa ang kooperasyon sa pagitan ng Philippine at US Naval Forces upang mapataas naman ang kakayanan ng Armed Forces of the Philippines na depensahan ang mga karagatan ng bansa.

Pinangunahan ni US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas ang opening ceremony ng CARAT 2012 sa General Santos City.

“Today we will be formally opening a full eight (8) days of activities that has been month in plan, over 800 United States Navy, Marine Corp, and Coastguards service members, will be working, training and perhaps singing karaoke, with their Philippine counterparts, and exercise that lives us all bare prepared to help our citizens in the time of need.”

Kasama sa pagsasanayan sa CARAT 2012 ang in-port training, subject-matter expertise exchange, diving at salvage training, medical, dental, engineering, civic action projects at community activities.

“Just as the relationship between our two navies has evolved, that was stronger than 3 years ago. This year’s CARAT is more challenging and advance, and that’s the goal there between the two countries,” pahayag ni US Rear Admiral Thomas Carney Jr.

“This is valuable undertaking not only in the priced skills that will be stoned to our soldiers, but also to the opportunity to be closer with our US partner,” pahayag naman ni Eastern Mindanao Commander Lt. General Jorhe Segovia.

DFA Consular Office in General Santos City closed until Jan. 26

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) informs the public that its Consular Office in General Santos City will be temporarily closed on Monday (January 25).

This is to give way to disinfection activities in its office premises and the implementation of other preventive measures to manage risks against coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The Consular Office will resume its regular operations on Tuesday (January 26).

Affected applicants with confirmed appointments who are unable to avail of consular services due to the suspension of operations must secure another appointment by emailing with the following information:

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Original appointment date and time
  • Preferred date and time of new appointment

The preferred new appointment may be on any working day from Monday to Friday from January 26 to February 26 during the CO’s regular operation hours 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Magnitude 5.2 quake rattles parts of Davao Occidental

MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocked Davao Occidental on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the temblor occurred at 10 a.m., 89 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town in Davao Occidental.

It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 65 kilometers.

Instrumental Intensity II was felt at Alabel, Sarangani and Instrumental Intensity I was felt at Kiamba, Sarangani; Koronadal City; General Santos City.

PHIVOLCS said it is not expecting damage nor aftershocks due to the quake.

The state seismologists earlier reported a magnitude 6.3 quake that struck off Calatagan, Batangas at 7:43 a.m. Friday.

Magnitude 6.2 quake jolts Davao Occidental

MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rattled parts of Davao Occidental on Wednesday, the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the quake occurred around 7:21 a.m. Its epicenter was recorded 86 kilometers southeast of Sarangani in Davao Occidental.

The quake had a depth of 16 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, the agency said.

The temblor at different intensities was felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity V – General Santos City, South Cotabato
  • Intensity IV – Kiamba, Alabel, Maasim, Glan, Malungon and Malapatan Saranggani; Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; Datu Blah Sinsuat, Maguindanao; Koronadal City, Polomolok, Tampakan and Tupi, South Cotabato
  • Intensity III – Maitum, Sarangani; Cotabato City, Maguindanao; Davao City; Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Tantangan and Santo Nino, South Cotabato;
  • Intensity II – Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat; Magpet, North Cotabato
  • Intensity I – Zamboanga City

The following instrumental Intensities were also reported:

  • Intensity V – Gen. Santos City, South Cotabato
  • Intensity IV – Kiamba, Saranggani; Tupi, South Cotabato; Koronadal City, South Cotabato
  • Intensity III – Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Alabel, Saranggani; Kidapawan City, North Cotabato

Phivolcs said damages and aftershocks are expected following the tremor.
