Morales supporters flock at the Office of the Ombudsman

MANILA, Philippines — Hundreds of supporters of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales gathered at her office building on Friday to show sympathy amid the controversies Morales is currently facing.

Among those present in the solidarity event were former Cabinet members under the previous administration.

Former DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman questioned the timing of the creation of the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission.

“Bakit mo itinatayo ngayon, dahil ba iniimbestigahan ka? Meron nga ho ba kayong bilyon o milyon?” said Soliman.

Soliman added that the Ombudsman shouldn’t be suppressed as she is just doing her duty.

The former secretary also called on President Rodrigo Duterte to allow an investigation into the allegations against him particularly his alleged hidden wealth.

“Destabilizer ganyan hindi po yan ang issue. Ang issue po meron ba kayong bilyon o wala? At malalaman lang po yan kung pipirma kayo ng waiver (Destabilization is not the issue. The issue is whether or not you have billions. The only way to find out is if you’re going to sign a waiver),” said the former Social Welfare Secretary.

For his part, former Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro fears the persecution against the Office of the Ombudsman.

They wanted to show Morales that they support her in performing her mandate.

“Kailangang kailangan ng bayan na  mayroong nagko-correct, merong nagba-balance at hindi natin pwedeng takutin sila (The country needs agencies that will carry out checks and balances and they should not be threatened),” said Luistro.

Morales did not attend the event but extended her message through Luistro.

“Sabi niya salamat sa iyong suporta, ‘Nais ko mang sumama sa misa baka masamain pa at sabihin ako ang nag-organisa ng misa at sabihin na pinupulitika ko ito'(She is grateful for your support. She says, ‘I would like to join you at the mass but they might take it the wrong way and say that I organized the mass and that I’m politicizing it) ,” relayed the former Education secretary.

Former Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jing Deles and former Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chairperson Eta Rosales were among the known personalities present at the solidarity event.

In a message read by a subordinate, Morales vowed to continue doing her job as the ombudsman. — Rey Pelayo | UNTV News & Rescue

President Rodrigo Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte urged Congress to expedite the creation of a new agency that will cater to the welfare of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“So I proposed in the coming months, and I hope to come up with a Department of Overseas Workers,” he said.

Duterte said the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has so much burden to focus on OFWs.

The President also said the new agency will address the persistent woes encountered by OFWs. There is also a proposal to create another agency for seafarers.

“So iyan ang ano ko sa mga kababayan ko na naghihirap sa labas, (So that is what I can provide for our fellowmen abroad) that there will be a more thorough review in policies for your protection and that somebody should look after you,” he said.

Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go in 2019 filed Senate Bill 202, or the Department of Overseas Filipinos Act of 2019 in support of President Duterte’s advocacy. AAC

Duterte to announce quarantine classifications for November tonight

Aileen Cerrudo   •   October 26, 2020

President Rodrigo Duterte will announce the new quarantine classifications for November on Monday (October 26) evening, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

“We will proceed with our meeting with him via Zoom at inaasahan pa rin pong magre-report ang ilang miyembro ng Gabinete lalong lalo na dito sa quarantine classifications (and we expect several Cabinet members will also present their report especially for the quarantine classifications),” he said during a press briefing.

Roque also confirmed the technical working group of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) already has a recommendation regarding the quarantine classifications.

The Palace official also confirmed that the President already assigned a vaccine czar two months ago. This was after the proposal of Senate President Pro Tempore Ralp Recto in order to prepare for the needed storage facility and the system for vaccine distribution.

“Two months ago, I recalled si Presidente may tinalagang vaccine czar kaya lang po, iyong naitalagang vaccine czar is hesitant when I asked him if I could remind the public that he has been designated as a vaccine czar kasi baka hindi na raw po maalala ni President. So we would like to wait for the Pesident to make an announcement anew (I recalled, two months ago, the President already assigned a vaccine czar. However, the assigned vaccine czar was hesitant when I asked him if I could remind the public that he has been designated. He said the President may have forgotten already so we would like to wait for the President to make the announcement anew),” Roque said. AAC (with reports from Rosalie Coz)

Publication of Duterte’s SALN depends on the Office of the Ombudsman, Palace says

Marje Pelayo   •   October 20, 2020

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang insists that the publication of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth or SALN depends on the Office of the Ombudsman.

This was the Palace’s response when asked whether the public will ever get to see the wealth records of the Chief Executive.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque advises the public to follow the regulations imposed by the Ombudsman on public access to SALN of government officials.

“May bago pong guidelines na sinusunod ang Office of the Ombudsman. Siguro po dahil po constitutional body ang Ombudsman, dapat pong sundin ang kanilang mga guidelines [The Office of the Ombudsman is following a set of guidelines. Since the Ombudsman is a constitutional body, their guidelines must be followed),” Roque stressed.

Unlike in past administrations, the Ombudsman is no longer allowing the public to see copies of the SALNs.

It can only be provided to a requester if he or she is the declarant or the person who filed the SALN or the duly representative of the declarant, a court order is present or the request is made by the Ombudsman’s field investigation units. MNP (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
