MANILA, Philippines — Reigning Miss Universe Demi Leigh Nel-Peters joined other candidates in an outreach program Thursday morning at the Kanlungan sa ER-MA Ministry in Manila.

The experience was a special one to Demi Leigh because it is part of her advocacy as the current Miss Universe.

“It reminds me with all the children that we get spent time today, I would like to focus on empowering women and children by giving them skills and knowledge on how to overcome difficult situations and how to prevent difficult situations,” said the Miss Universe 2017.

The beauty queens took the 20 resident orphans to a treat at a fast food chain.

They were all excited to taste some native Filipino dishes.

Miss Philippines Rachel Peters, who joined the girls said she felt very proud to introduce to her fellow beauty queens the culture and character of Filipinos especially the Filipino hospitality.

“The feeling of being a family when you invite someone into your home, you’re inviting them as part of your family, while they’re here in the Philippines and hopefully that is something that can take back and share with people in their countries as well,” said Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters.

Meanwhile, Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mitinaere couldn’t contain her excitement on her second trip to the Philippines, which she also considers her home.

“I feel happy. I feel a little bit like I’m home, I’m seeing like Oh, I went there. I went there I’m so excited about everything,” said Iris Mitinaere.
