The lifeless body of a man was found in a ravine at Brgy. Guinabang, Bacnotan, La Union Tuesday afternoon at around 2:30 p.m.

The authorities have identified the victim as Felix Apilado, a resident for Panicsican, San Juan, La Union. He was a vehicle maintenance personnel at an electric company.

Based on the investigation conducted by Scene Of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) the victim had a nylon cord tied around his neck and a puncture wound on his left chest.

Brgy. Kagawad Benido Ganolla told police, he saw a white multicab at around two in the afternoon with three men on board wearing the same uniform as the victim.

Apilado’s body will undergo autopsy while investigation will continue to look into the motive and possible mastermind of the crime. — Freema Salonga (with reports from Toto Fabros)

La Union town vice mayor, bodyguard killed in ambush; mayor wounded

LA UNION, Philippines — Balaoan , La Union Vice Mayor Alfred Concepcion and his security escort Michael Ulep were killed an ambush on Wednesday morning (November 14).

His daughter Balaoan Mayor Aleli Concepcion was wounded in the incident.

Based on investigation, the Concepcions were aboard their respective vehicles going to the municipal hall at around 8:10 a.m. when unidentified gunmen fired shots at them on Luna Road, Barangay Cabuaan.

The victims were rushed to Balaoan District Hospital where Vice Mayor Concepcion died shortly.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Region 1 has formed a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to look into the case.

PNP Chief PDG Oscar Albayalde said authorities are checking if the Concepcions have been receiving death threats prior to the incident.

The SITG will also investigate whether the suspects are members of a private armed group and if a political rival is possibly behind it.

“Yes isa yan. Of course, kaya yesterday we presented mga operations natin on PAGs (private armed groups) particularly the identified PAGs doon sa Nueva Ecija which we said earlier that this group is also operating in the province of La Union and nearby provinces in Cagayan, Bulacan and parts of Region 4A,” said Albayalde.

Malacañang condemned the ambush against the La Union local officials and has directed the PNP to look into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.— Toto Fabros

Balaoan town mayor and vice mayor ambushed in La Union

The convoy of Balaoan town Mayor Aleli Concepcion and Vice Mayor Alfred Concepcion was ambushed by unidentified gunmen in La Union Wednesday morning, November 14.

According to La Union Police Provincial Director PSSupt. Ricardo Layug, the incident took place around 8:10 a.m. on Balaoan Luna Road, Barangay Cabuaan.

Layug said the victims and their companions were riding in two separate vehicles on their way to the municipal hall when assailants attacked them.

The two officials were brought to the hospital but there are no reports yet of their current condition. — Lea Ylagan


La Union LGU goes house-to-house to convince residents to evacuate

LA UNION, Philippines – The local government of San Fernando designated a specific evacuation center in different parts of the municipality for residents affected by typhoon Rosita in coastal areas.

Three public schools, two private ones and one university have opened doors for evacuating residents.

One family from Barangay Catbangen and two families from Barangay Ilocanor Sur took refuge in Catbangen Elementary School.

Authorities are continuously encouraging residents in the coastal areas to evacuate as potential storm surges may endanger their lives, according to La Union Vice Governor Aureo Nisce.

“Hindi kayo namin pineperwisyo kasi yung mga ibang nag-eevacuate, lalo na kung forcible, nagrereklamo pa. Including the resorts, they have already been warned of the impending typhoon,” Nisce said.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is doing a house-to-house warning to urge residents to leave to a safer ground or else, they will be forced to evacuate. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Aiko Miguel)
