Man facing rape case dies after jumping off building in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – A 66-year old man facing a rape case died after reportedly jumping off the third floor of the Manila City hall building on Wednesday, local authorities said.

A report from the Manila Police District (MPD) identified the man as Ricardo Reyes, who was arrested by Pandacan police on Tuesday for allegedly molesting a seven-year-old girl.

He was supposed to attend an inquest proceeding at the City Prosecutors office on Wednesday afternoon when the incident occurred at 2:45 p.m.

MPD Station 10 chief Julius Añonuevo said that prior to the incident, Reyes complained of dizziness and chest pain. He also asked for a glass of water, and requested to be temporarily released from the handcuffs.

When his requests were granted, Reyes allegedly ran and jumped off the building.

Reyes was rushed to the Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital where he later died.

Mayor Isko removes name from public WiFi station

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Isko Domagoso on Friday (August 16) changed the name of the newly launched WiFi charging station and phone booth outside the Manila City Hall.

He named the facility ‘MNLKonek’ instead of the original ‘ISKOnek’ which followed his moniker ‘Isko’ after drawing criticisms from netizens.

According to Manila Public Information Office chief Julius Leonen, it’ was the Eastern Communications that named the project ‘ISKOnek.’

Leonen said Mayor Isko is sensitive to criticisms that’s why he makes sure to act swiftly to the demands of the netizens.

The WiFi kiosk was launched on Wednesday (August 14) where the public may connect to the Internet free of charge.

The facility can serve up to 100 users for 30 minutes. – MNP (with details from April Cenedoza)
