MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang on Thursday condemned the killing of veteran journalist Jesus “Jess” Malabanan.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the tragic murder of Jesus “Jess” Malabanan in Calbayog City,” acting presidential spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said in a statement.

Nograles said the Presidential Task Force on Media Security is “now looking into the incident and exploring all angles, including the possibility that the killing was related to his work as a journalist.”

“We condole with the family, loved ones, and colleagues of Mr. Malabanan and assure them that the government will exert all efforts to ensure that those responsible are caught, charged, and convicted for this crime,” he added.

Malabanan was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants while he was inside his home in Tinambacan District in Calbayog City, Samar on Wednesday evening.

The Philippine National Police has formed a task group to expedite the conduct of investigation into the incident.

Nograles urged everyone with information “to come forward to authorities and cooperate with law enforcers in order to immediately bring Mr. Malabanan’s killers to justice.”

“We would want to assure and we assure the public that the budget will be signed.

Nagpapaalala ang COMELEC, ‘wag ninyong i-endanger ang inyong mga supporters, because that’s what you are doing. Just so you want your crowds, your photo-ops, you are endangering the lives of the Filipinos who are supporting you,” ani Jimenez.

“Obviously, yung situation we are still on a public health emergency, we all have to be careful and all of these moves have to be coordinated para hindi naman masyadong magulo, hindi magkakaroon ng untoward incident. There are mechanisms in place pero kailangan lang talagang to follow these mechanisms,” ani Nograles.
