LTO summons doctor to explain behavior in viral road rage video

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has summoned the doctor in a viral road rage video as it sought his explanation over his rude behavior.

In a Facebook post, the LTO said it has issued on Monday a show cause order against the physician, identified as Tomas Joaquin Mendez, to explain why his license should not be suspended or revoked over the incident.

The agency cited Section 27 of the Land Transportation and Traffic code which provides the authority to suspend, and the exclusive power to revoke any driver’s license issued if it has reason to believe that the holder is an improper person to operate motor vehicles, or as an accessory to, the commission of any crime or act which endangers the public.

The agency also directed Mendez in its order to appear at the Intelligence and Investigation Division of the LTO Central Office in Quezon City on Dec. 5.

“He is also to file a Sworn Explanation/Comment and show cause on why he should not be administratively liable under Section 27 of Republic Act No. 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code,” the LTO said in a statement.

This came after Mendez was caught in a video circulating online hurling expletives against other drivers in two road traffic altercations.

If Mendez fails to appear and submit his sworn explanation, the LTO said it will be construed as a waiver of his right to be heard in the proceeding.

“He will, however, be informed of the result of the evaluation of his case,” the agency added.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) earlier tagged Mendez’s action as an example of abusive behavior and misconduct in a motorist.

It also reminded drivers to remain calm when involved in similar road incidents to avoid hurting other people.

LTO extends validity of registration of vehicles with plate numbers ending in 6,7,8

Marje Pelayo   •   August 4, 2020

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is extending the validity of registration of motor vehicles with plate numbers ending in 6, 7 and 8 until September 30.

The advisory is in line with the implementation of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in the National Capital Region and nearby areas in Region 4A.

The measure aims to avoid congestion at all LTO offices and to consistently observe social distancing during the community quarantine.

Likewise, this will ensure orderly processing of transactions without compromising the health of both the agency’s personnel and clients.

The agency assures that the validity extension will not incur any penalty or surcharge for concerned vehicle owners .
