Robie de Guzman   •   March 30, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – Operations of the Pasig River Ferry Service will be temporarily suspended from April 1 to April 4, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

In a statement, the MMDA said normal operations will resume on Monday, April 5.

“Meanwhile, as Metro Manila is under enhanced community quarantine, the ferry service will be implementing 50% seating capacity,” the agency said.

All Authorized Persons Outside Residence (APOR) are allowed to ride the ferry service, provided they bring an identification card.

The national government placed the National Capital Region (NCR) and nearby provinces of Cavite, Bulacan, Rizal, and Laguna under ECQ from March 29 to April 4 in a bid to arrest the surge in COVID-19 cases.

‘Staycations’ in hotels within NCR Plus suspended during Lenten week—DOT

Aileen Cerrudo   •   March 29, 2021

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Tourism has suspended “staycations” in hotels within the National Capital Region (NCR) Plus during Lenten week.

The tourism department has issued strict guidelines for DOT-accredited hotels and other establishments amid the rising cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country. This will be effective from March 29 until April 4.

In an advisory, the DOT has suspended the operation of staycation hotels within the so-called NCR Plus bubble, which covers Metro Manila, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan. No new bookings will be allowed for the week.

However, guests who are already billeted in hotels by midnight on Sunday (March 28) may continue to stay for the duration of their original booking.

DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said she is grateful for staycation hotels for allowing their clients rebook without penalties.

The Tourism Department also warned that sanctions will be given to accredited establishments that are not strictly enforcing the minimum health and safety guidelines, and quarantine protocols. Sanctions would include fines, suspension, and cancellation of accreditation.

Meanwhile, regular hotels in areas with less strict general community quarantine may operate ancillary facilities subject to minimum health standards. AAC

PNP on heightened alert status from March 29 until Holy Week

Aileen Cerrudo   •   March 26, 2021

MANILA, Philippines—From normal alert status, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will raise its alert status nationwide from March 29 until Holy Week.

PNP Spokesperson PBGen. Ilderbrandi Usana said local police will monitor places of worship after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) has allowed limited religious activities from April 1 to 4.

Usana added that the PNP also needs to increase alert status beginning March 29 which is the anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA). He also said that PNP regional directors have the authority to implement a full alert status depending on the situation in their area.

Inclined ang mga regional directors na mag-full alert this coming Sunday, depende kung ano ang situation doon sa area. Heightened alert most likely iyan until such time that we really have to re-deploy our personnel that requires full alert especially doon sa mga concerned municipality (Regional directors are inclined to authorize a full alert this coming Sunday, depending on the situation in the area. It will be on heightened alert, most likely, until such time that we really have to re-deploy our personnel that requires full alert especially in the concerned municipalities),” he said.

The PNP official reiterates the need to comply with minimum health safety protocols.

“We have enough number of police personnel that can be deployed to manage the movement of the people, basta ma-comply iyong minimum health protocols palagay ko hindi naman magkaka problema (just comply with minimum health protocols and we will have no problem),” Usana said. -AAC (with reports from Lea Ylagan)
