Lacson advises Robredo not to join anti-drug ops; focus on cutting drug supply

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Panfilo Lacson has advised Vice President Leni Robredo to focus more on reducing the supply of illegal drugs in the country instead of joining an anti-drug operation.

Lacson gave the advice after he met with Robredo on Friday to discuss what she could do in her new role as the co-chairperson of the inter-agency committee on anti-illegal drugs (ICAD), which President Rodrigo Duterte handed to her last week.

The senator said Robredo’s presence in drug stings might compromise the operation due to security protocols as the country’s second-highest official.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency director-general Aaron Aquino earlier challenged Robredo to join one of the anti-drug operations, to which she accepted.

But they could make some arrangements paano isasagawa yan,” he told UNTV News in a phone interview.

Lacson, a former chief of the Philippine National Police, said the focus of the drug war has been on the demand side which mostly targets drug users and peddlers on the street.

He pointed out that cutting the supply would make the street value of drugs prohibitive and take down big-time dealers.

“Kapag supply yung focus mo, concentrate mo, unang una magiging prohibitive ang presyo, Pangalawa, siyempre mga big-time drug dealers ang mga mahi-hit mo,” he said.

Lacson also said that further strengthening the process of intelligence gathering against those involved in the narcotics trade would also help in the anti-drug campaign.

He added that during his stint as PNP chief, he maintained close coordination with his foreign counterparts and drug enforcement units in the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Lacson also said that he gave names of some people who could help Robredo with the law enforcement part of the job but did not elaborate on who these are. – RRD (with details from Nel Maribojoc)

Duterte vows to hold accountable operatives who ‘acted beyond bounds’ in drug war

Marje Pelayo   •   September 22, 2021

President Rodrigo Duterte in his speech on Tuesday (September 21) at the 76th United Nations General Assembly has vowed to hold accountable anyone who went beyond bounds in his administration’s drug war.

He stressed that his administration “has a mandate and an obligation” to his people and all criminals will be dealt “with the full force” of the Philippine law.

“Those found to have acted beyond bounds during operations shall be made accountable before our laws,” he said.

Duterte said the Philippine government has finalized with the UN a joint program on human rights, a model for constructive engagement between a sovereign member state such as the Philippines and an international body.

“Meaningful change, to be enduring, must come from within. The imposition of one’s will over another – no matter how noble the intent – has never worked in the past. And it never will in the future,” he said, implying his rejection of the probe set by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The chief executive admitted that achieving such a goal “has not been without challenges.”

Thus, he informed the UN that he had instructed the country’s Justice Department and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to review the conduct of his administration’s campaign against illegal drugs.

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Monday confirmed that he had a meeting with Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Manny Pacquiao ahead of the period for filing of candidacy for the 2022 elections.

“Yes we had a meeting and Vice President Robredo so we’re trying to reach out to each and everyone. Wala naman masamang makinig eh,” Domagoso said.

He, however, refused to divulge any information on what transpired during the meeting.

“I’m not in the liberty to discuss the details. But I can confirm there was a meeting and hopefully there will be more meetings ‘no na pewde namin pag-usapan ang mga bagay-bagay,” he said.

Mayor Isko expressed hope that decisions related to the 2022 elections will be made soon.

“I’m very optimistic that things will be better when we heal the wounds with our fellowmen. Mas madaling makaka-move on. And I’m hopeful decisions will be made in a couple of days now,” he said.

Moreno recently took an oath as the president of the Aksyon Demokratiko political party but he has yet to reveal his final plans for the next year’s polls.

Pacquiao on Sunday formally declared his plan to seek the presidency when he accepted the nomination of his PDP-Laban faction to be its presidential bet in the 2022 polls.

Robredo, for her part, expressed willingness to become the opposition’s unity candidate.
