Judiciary advances to next round at UNTVCup

UNTV News   •   November 19, 2019   •   161

Best Player of the Game Warren Ybañez exhibited great leadership at the hardcourt by providing  12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

The two-time champion Judiciary Magis will move to UNTV Cup’s 2nd round of elimination after it defeated the season 5 champion PNP Responders in their do-or-die match last Sunday at Pasig City Spots Center, 78-72.

Former professional basketball player Warren Ybañez led the Magis with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

According to Warren, one of their secrets in winning this game is trust.

“Sinabi lang namin […] trust our team mates, magtiwala sa kakampi, dumipensa, mananalo kami sa game na ito,” BPG Warren Ybañez said.

While according to Coach Joey Yabut, their zone defense was effective that’s why their players were not exhausted.

“Ang ginawa namin conditioning noong Friday. Ang sabi ko lang sa kanila last game na natin ‘to kung di tayo mananalo, mas mahaba ang pahinga, siguro lahat ng lakas nila inilabas nila ngayon.”

For the PNP Responders, SPO3 Anton Tolentino Jr led the team with 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block with the support from 2-time MVP Olan Omiping with 17 points.

As for the fate of the whole PNP Responders team next season, Coach Eric Samson said he is leaving it up to the PNP management.

“As of now, mare-reflect namin yung mga pagkakamali especially this game di ba? So sa mga sumusuporta sa PNP Responders, keep supporting us, next year, babalik yung team na ito sigurado,” the head coach of PNP Responders said.

With this win, Judiciary Magis advances to the next stage of the competition while the PNP Responders bid farewell for the meantime together with GSIS Furies for Group B.

In the other games, PITC Global Traders will also proceed to the 2nd round elimination of UNTV Cup after beating the Ombudsman Graft Busters with final score of 87-70.

With this victory, PITC will join PhilHealth, Agriculture and AFP to the next phase of the tournament while the Ombudsman Graft Busters and SSS Kabalikat will go on early vacation in preparation for the next season in the league of public servants, UNTV Cup. — Bernard Dadis

Tough defense was Judiciary’s main weapon in defeating the three-time and defending champion AFP Cavaliers last Sunday, 78-72.

“Yung ensayo namin double effort kasi kalaban namin three-time champion, kailangan talaga sila paghandaan. At saka depensa namin medyo maganda kanina kaya siguro tinalo namin sila,” Judiciary Magis Coach Joey Yabut said.

On the other hand, AFP Cavaliers head coach Cornelio “Sonny” Manucat II said, “Medyo nagkaroon ng lapses sa defense, yung game plan hindi ginawa.”

Hailed as Best Players of the Game were Jearomel Serrano, who nailed 5 three-pointers, and Chester Tolomia with 17 points.

“Sobrang saya kami […] yung team namin medyo nag-improve talaga yung sa depensa,” Chester Tolomia expressed.

“Eto yung halos pinakamalakas na team ngayon [AFP Cavaliers], kahit papaano nagawan namin ng magandang laban yung AFP at ang resulta nanalo kami,” co-BPG awardee Jearomel Serrano said.

Only the Cavalier Darwin Cordero scored in double digits, 32 points, for AFP.

Because of tough defense, the usual AFP gunners, Boyet Bautista and Jerry Lumongsod, were restricted in the scoring department.

Meanwhile, Wilfredo Casulla Jr. was not present in the clash as he is undergoing mandatory schooling for career advancement if the Philippine Air Force which will end after two months.

AFP Cavaliers has now dropped to 2nd place in the ranking with 6 wins and 1 loss, leaving the DENR Warriors on top.

Meanwhile, Judiciary Magis improved its record with 3 wins and 3 losses.

In the other game, Marvin Mercado recorded a double-double stat line with 28 points, 14 rebounds plus 3 assists and 1 steal to lift the NHA Builders against the Agriculture Food Masters, 74-72.

And in the third game, PITC Global Traders climbed to the 4th spot after serving the Malacañang-PSC Kamao its second loss, 68-58.

“Wala lang laban lang talaga, we are just working hard every practice, every game, so I hope magtuloy-tuloy,” PITC Global Traders Head Coach Vic Ycasiano admitted.

Marlon Keith Martin was honored as the Best Player with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal.

On next Sunday’s game (December 8), PhilHealth Plus will go against Judiciary Magis at 2 pm while NHA will take on PITC and AFP- Malacañang-PSC will be pitched as the main game of the triple-header.

Games will still be played at San Juan Knights Gym live starting at 2PM with telecast, webcast and live streaming at UNTV Cup’s Facebook and YouTube accounts. — Bernard Dadis

AFP and DENR remain unbeaten at UNTV Cup

UNTV News   •   November 25, 2019

One of DENR’s key factors to victory was their tough defense, challenging the shots of Agriculture Food Masters, forcing them to commit more turnovers.

Season 7 third placer NHA Builders failed to defeat the defending champion AFP Cavaliers during their face off last Thursday with final score 86-84.

It will be recalled that the Cavaliers have beaten the Builders in the best of three semifinals series last season.

Former Letran Knights standouts Boyet Bautista and Air Man Jerry Lumongsod were hailed as Best Players of the Game with 17 points and 19 points a piece including a crucial 3-point shot from Lumongsod in the final one minute and 38 seconds for the AFP to get the lead, 83-80.

In the first quarter, the NHA Builders were ahead by 7 points against AFP, 19-12, led by Alvin Vitug who contributed 11 points that early.

But the AFP Cavaliers quickly recovered in the 2nd quarter and tied the game at 37 points.

And in the 3rd quarter, the AFP Cavaliers took the lead, 64-61.

The last period was a neck-to-neck bout as the games have tied many times.

NHA dominated the boards by 51 compared to 20 of AFP while the men in uniform assisted more, 14-9.

“It’s a hard-fought game, alam namin talaga na yung NHA malakas talaga yan since before dahil kumpleto rin sila. Siguro breaks of the game, sinuwerte lang kami noong huli,” AFP Cavaliers Corporal Sonny Manucat said.

In the other game, the rookie team DENR Warriors stayed undefeated after a triumphant bout over the Agriculture Food Masters, 94-85.

The Food Masters were leading over the DENR Warriors, in the first quarter and in 2nd quarter.

But in the 2nd half the DENR Warriors started to turn the game to their side as they took the lead at the end of the third period.

Aside from the tight defense of DENR, the bench players have stepped up too showing the depth of Warriors line up against the Food Masters.

“Sinabihan ko lang mga players ko na we have to remenber na we are playing as a team, if we continue individually tatambakan talaga tayo. Good thing, the team responded,” DENR Warriors Head Coach Dir. Norlito Eneran expressed.

“Noong nag-run na yung DENR ay nataranta na yung mga bata. Nawala na yung composure. Pero we lost to a better team,”Agriculture Food Masters Head Coach Rodney Santos said.

Ryan Abanes and Desiderio Ayson shined as the Best Players of the Game with 23 points and 18 points respectively.

Meanwhile, Malacañang-PSC Kamao toppled the PhilHealth Plus with a 98-91 victory.

With this win, the Kamao now holds a 5-1-win loss record.

“Noong first half, wala kami depensa, binigay naming laro kaya ang tapos ng score ng first half 47-all. Sinabi ko lang sa dug out, Guys hindi yan laro natin. Kailangan nating dumipensa ng maayos, kailangan nating magsakrapisyo kung gusto nating manalo,” Malacañang-PSC Kamao Head Coach Raffy Gonzalez revealed.

Next Sunday, December 01, the Malacañang-PSC Kamao will face PITC Global Traders in the main game of the triple header while the AFP Cavaliers will face former 2-time champion Judiciary Magis in the first game and the Agriculture Food Masters will take on the NHA Builders after.

Games will still be played at San Juan Knights Gym live starting at 2PM with telecast, webcast and live streaming at UNTV Cup’s Facebook and YouTube accounts. — Bernard Dadis

Do or Die Sunday at UNTV Cup

Two former champions will settle the dispute over who will advance to the next elimination round of UNTV Cup, the league of public servants.

On Sunday (November 17) at 4:30 PM at Pasig City Sports Center, the Judiciary Magis will face PNP Responders as both teams fight for dear life.

Having a slow start, both of them have a record of 1 win and 3 loss. Their final game at the first-round elimination will determine which team will take the remaining slot in Group B for the next stage of the competition or which will go on early vacation together with GSIS Furies.

PNP Responders head coach Eric Samson said, “Hopefully makapasok kami sa next round. Yung mga lapses namin doon namin kailangang tumutok. Ang dami naming lapses eh aral pa kami kung ano pa dapat naming aralin sa depensa at opensa namin sa hardcourt.”

Last season the PNP Responders finished 4th place while the Judiciary Magis finished 8th.

Meanwhile in the first game, it’s also a do-or-die situation between the PITC Global Traders and the Ombudsman Graft Busters as there will be a triple-tie with PhilHealth Plus.

Should PITC win, the Ombudsman will be eliminated together with SSS Kabalikat and the PhilHealth Plus will advance together with PITC Global Traders. But if the Graft Busters win by more than 15 points, the team will advance to the 2nd round together with PITC and the PhilHealth will be dropped together with SSS.  – Bernard Dadis
