Makabayan bloc wants probe on SSS, GSIS investments with Megawide Construction

Maris Federez   •   December 8, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — The Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives appealed for an investigation to be set on the reported losses incurred by the country’s social insurance agencies in their investments with Megawide Construction Corporation.

As mentioned in House Resolution 2397 filed by Bayan Muna representatives Carlos Zarate, Ferdinand Gaite, and Eufemia Cullamat, the total shares of the Social Security System (SSS) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) with Megawide as of last year have accounted to 4.48% and 3.99%, respectively.

However, the resolution said that these investments suffered losses as widespread market shock brought by the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the share to plummet in 2020 and both agencies were not able to recover since then.

It added that “combining both GSIS and SSS losses, this would amount to a total combined loss of Php1,606,170,711.90

The lawmakers emphasized that “these staggering losses are truly lamentable if it will be considered for instance that SSS is yet to fulfill its commitment to Congress to implement the second tranche of Pph1,000 pension increase” for senior citizens.

The group also said that contributions of the elderly and workers were put in a predicament due to these losses.

This, he said, prompted them to call for an investigation by the proper committee in the Lower House.

—/mbmf (from the report of UNTV Correspondent Nel Maribojoc)

Lawmakers want bill on oil pricing transparency to be certified as urgent

Maris Federez   •   October 18, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — The Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives is urging President Rodrigo Duterte to certify as urgent the proposed bill that seeks transparency in determining price increases of petroleum products in the country.

This was prompted by the eight consecutive increases in the price of oil products in recent weeks.

Bayan Muna Partylist Representative Carlos Zarate said there is no transparency on the side of oil companies on the basis of the increase or how they determine the amount of the price hike.

Zarate also urged oil companies not to make moves that will hinder the approval of House Bill No. 10386 that seeks to specify in detail the process of price increases being adopted by oil companies.

The Bayan Muna Partylist lawmakers also appealed to the Department of Energy to support the said bill. /mbmf (from the report of UNTV Correspondent Nel Maribojoc)

Former VP Jejomar Binay to run for senator in 2022 polls

Robie de Guzman   •   October 5, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – Former Vice President Jejomar Binay will seek a Senate post in the 2022 elections under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), a party official said Tuesday.

“We welcome and are very grateful for the support extended to the former vice president by other political parties, and for him being invited to be part of their senatorial slate,” former Congressman JV Bautista, who serves as acting UNA secretary general, said in a statement.

Binay was earlier reported to be running for senator under the tandem of Senator Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Vicente Tito Sotto III.

But according to Bautista, the UNA party is still in talks with other political groups. Binay is the current president of UNA.

“At the moment, nothing has been finalized yet and UNA is still in talks with other organizations/political groups and is in the process of adopting senatorial candidates from these parties who share UNA’s vision and platform of government,” Bautista said.

Binay is expected to file his certificate of candidacy for senator on Thursday, Oct. 7.
