Iloilo City placed under MECQ from May 23 to May 31

MANILA, Philippines — The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) has placed Iloilo City under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from May 23 until May 31, 2021.

This, following a surge of COVID-19 cases in the city which prompted the city government to appeal for such to the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas through an executive order explained that the surge of infections overwhelmed city hospitals and the majority of them temporarily stopped admitting the patients because their bed capacity is becoming critical.

“Most private hospitals in Iloilo City, despite being overwhelmed, are discouraged from increasing their bed capacities for COVID-19 patients attributable to unsettled claims for the state health insurer,” he said.

As of Sunday (May 23), the partial count of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Iloilo City was 24.

Likewise, the city government imposed a moratorium on travel of persons from Negros Island to Iloilo City and vice versa starting May 25, 2021.
