(Dave Tirao & Ruth Navales, UNTV News)

Rescue ops ongoing in flooded areas in Metro Manila, Rizal – PCG

Robie de Guzman   •   November 12, 2020

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Thursday said it has deployed more rescue teams, boats, and other assets to aid families affected by widespread floods due to Typhoon Ulysses.

The PCG said that as of 1 p.m. Thursday, it has mobilized a total of 20 rescue teams composed of at least 72 personnel to assist families trapped in their flooded homes in Metro Manila and nearby provinces such as Rizal and Cavite.

The rescue teams were equipped with search and rescue gears, 10 rubber boats, six aluminum boats, 11 multi-purpose vehicles and three trucks, the agency added.

The PCG also sent additional rubber boats and vehicles to Marikina City to help evacuate families who have climbed to their rooftops or sought higher ground as Ulysses’ strong winds and torrential rains inundated large swaths of Luzon.

The local government of Marikina earlier called on the national government to assist in rescue operations as the water level in Marikina river rose to over 20 meters, prompting forced evacuation.

Authorities in Rizal also reported heavy flooding in the towns of Rodriquez and San Mateo. Local officials have also coordinated with the PCG to facilitate rescue operations.

The PCG also reported that it has helped evacuate to safety senior citizens residing in Hospicio de San Jose in San Miguel, Manila after floodwaters entered the building.

The coast guard said it has five remaining teams on standby at its national headquarters for possible augmentation to ongoing evacuation and rescue efforts.
