CEBU CITY, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte assured he remains in good health after submitting himself into a number of medical procedures.
From the procedure, he said, his doctor diagnosed him with Barrett’s esophagus or medically known as gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The President said he was told that the disease was a result of his too much drinking and smoking.
“I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy about a week ago. Joey did the procedure and he said that… Well, I have a bad case of Barrett. He said, ‘If you’ll just stop drinking, you will live,’ ” the President said in a speech at an event with the Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology in Lapu-Lapu City on Friday, September 21.
President Duterte also admitted his other health conditions such as suffering from perpetual pain due to a spine injury, as well as constipation – the same condition as his mother and his son, Sebastian.
“Historically, I took after my mother who was always constipated. That was her complaint, but she lived to be 96 years old. So if you want to live forever, pray for constipation,” Duterte said.
Despite some health issues, Duterte said that overall, he is in good health.
“Maybe God is sometimes kind. He builds your immune system that good. Some of them are… I’m 73, and they are still very good, still healthy, no problem,” the President said. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Rosalie Coz)

“Ilang buhay na naman ‘ho ang nawala sa atin. Itigil na ang kawalan ng disiplina. Itigil na ang pagiging pabaya sa kalsada. Sa utos ng ating Pangulo, sisikapin naming masiguro na tanging mga roadworthy vehicles lang ang bibiyahe sa kalsada, at lahat ng driver ay may sapat na kaalaman at disiplina sa pagmamaneho, (Several lives have already been lost. Let us stop the lack of discipline. Stop recklessness on the road. According to our President’s order, let us strive to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles should operate and all drivers should have discipline in driving),” Tugade said.—AAC
President Rodrigo Duterte has certified the proposed P4.1 trillion 2020 national budget as urgent.
According to his letter dated September 17 addressed to the Senate and the House of Representatives, he wants the immediate passage of the proposed national budget to “maintain continuous government operations.”
“Ensure the budgetary preparedness that will enable the government to effectively perform its constitutional mandate,” the letter stated.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo, the president certified the proposed 2020 national budget as urgent to avoid a repetition of last year’s delay which affected several economic programs of the administration.
“He [Duterte] wants the members of Congress [to know] the importance of passing the budget on time to avoid a repeat of last year’s delay of its passage that wreak havoc in the economic program of the administration, and affected the delivery of basic services to the people,” he said in a statement.—AAC
