Duterte raises Pacquiao’s tax evasion case during PDP-Laban meeting
MANILA, Philippines—President Rodrigo Duterte brought up Senator Manny Pacquiao’s tax evasion case during the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino and Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) meeting on Tuesday.
Duterte said the senator owed the government P2.2 billion in back taxes. This was after Pacquiao previously claimed that corruption has gotten worse under the current administration.
“I remember he has a tax evasion case and he has been assessed to pay P2.2 billion ang utang niya na hindi niya binayaran ang gobyerno in all his fights. Lahat na iyan, since the beginning, maraming away iyan at billion ang kinita niya,” he said.
(In all his fights, he did not pay the government. He had a lot of fights and he earned billions.)
The President, however, clarified that he was not running after Pacquiao. He just wanted to point out Pacquiao’s situation after the senator claimed that corruption in government has worsened.
“May utang siya na P2.2 billion not because gusto ko siyang habulin. Ayaw ko but sabi niya kasi corrupt. Kung corrupt kami, eh di ikaw? When you cheat government, you are a corrupt official,” he said.
(He has a P2.2 billion debt but I do not want to chase him for that. But he said we are corrupt, what about you?) AAC (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
