MANILA, Philippines—The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and mall operators will discuss extending mall hours in preparation for the holiday season.

In a media briefing, MMDA chairman Benhur Abalos said the extension of mall hours will help avoid the influx of shoppers during rush hours. The MMDA will also discuss conducting sales only on weekends to avoid traffic congestion.

Para ang pasok hindi sabay-sabay, hanggang mga alas dyes ng gabi o maski midnight pa mas maganda ([We can extend it] up to 10:00 p.m. or even midnight to prevent customers from flocking to the malls en-masse),” he said.

LTFRB issues show-cause orders vs two busway consortiums

Aileen Cerrudo   •   October 19, 2021

MANILA, Philippines—The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Monday (October 18) issued show-cause orders against two consortiums operating along the EDSA Busway for failing to deploy sufficient number of buses.

LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra explained that the agreed cap on the maximum allowable units of bus units is at 550 buses, but the two consortiums on Monday only averaged as low as 120 units.

Minabuti nating mag-issue ng show-cause order (We decided to issue a show-cause order), directing the two consortiums running the EDSA Busway why their franchise or special permit in running the EDSA Busway should not be cancelled, suspended or that they be not penalized for deploying so few units,” he added.

He added that the two consortiums are receiving payment under the Libreng Sakay service contracting program yet there are still persistent reports of drivers and conductors not receiving their salary despite rendering  full service.

“Now that we have paid so much of this to operators already, particularly dito sa EDSA Busway Consortium or anyone for that matter, hindi na nila pwedeng gawing rason ang hindi pagbabayad sa kanilang drivers,” Chairman Delgra said.

He reminded bus operators of their obligation to pay employees as mandated under the Labor Code for the EDSA Busway Libreng Sakay Program. AAC

Commonwealth-University Avenue Zipper Lane reopened to address heavy traffic

Robie de Guzman   •   October 18, 2021

The Commonwealth-University Avenue Zipper Lane reopened on Monday to ease heavy traffic along Commonwealth Avenue going to Philcoa and Elliptical Road, the Quezon City government said.

In an advisory, the city government said that the zipper lane will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. from Monday to Friday to vehicles bound for the University of the Philippines, C.P. Garcia Avenue, and Katipunan Avenue.

“Bilang tugon sa bumibigat na daloy ng trapiko tuwing umaga sa kahabaan ng Commonwealth Avenue patungong Philcoa at Elliptical Road, muling bubuksan ng Pamahalaang Lungsod Quezon, sa tulong ng MMDA at EEI, ang Commonwealth-University Avenue Zipper Lane,” it said.

The zipper lane will start at UP Techno-Hub slot and end at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and University Avenue by the entrance to the UP Campus.

“Magsisilbi itong ‘by-pass’ para sa mga bumabaybay ng Commonwealth Avenue na nais magtungong UP, C.P. Garcia Avenue, at Katipunan Avenue, upang maiwasan ang Philcoa at Elliptical Road,” the city government said.

“Para sa mga nais gumamit ng Commonwealth-University Avenue Zipper Lane, at sa iba pang apektadong motorista, sundan po natin ang mga Traffic Enforcers ng Quezon City Task Force on Transport and Traffic Management, at ang mga ilalatag na Road Safety Signages,” it added.
