MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) said it will investigate the learning module showing a poor depiction of farmers.
The particular module drew criticisms from the public after a netizen posted a photo on Facebook. The post said it might discourage students from pursuing a career in farming and agriculture.
Several senators, including Senator Francis Pangilinan, also called out DepEd to explain their stance regarding the module.
“We understand a vast majority of our farmers are poor, but to stereotype them—Ano ang magiging mensahe sa ating mga kabataan? Na magiging hindi katanggap-tanggap ang maging magsasaka? Sana maipaliwanag ito, (What message is it sending to the youth? That it’s not acceptable to become farmers? This should be explained),” he said.
Senator Pia Cayetano, the sponsor of DepEd budget in the Senate plenary, said the department is ready to release an explanation on the issue.
“I think everyone can agree with that, that this is a wrongful and harmful depiction of our farmers who feed us and DepEd acknowledges that and they know of the problem and the decision was to issue an explanation,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Education Department is also investigating the teacher that used actress Angel Locsin as an example in the examination material. AAC (with reports from Dante Amento)
