DENR Warriors make UNTV Cup history, wins championship

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Warriors made UNTV Cup history after winning the championship on Monday (March 9).

The DENR Warriors defeated the previous champion Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Cavaliers in a best-of-three series of the UNTV Cup Season 8.

The rookie team dominated in the first and second game of the series. The AFP Cavaliers did not back down in fighting for the championship but the DENR Warriors were relentless in securing their first championship.

Game 2 ended with the finals score of 99-91.

DENR Warrior coach Norlito Eneran expressed his gratitude to the DENR Warrior players for their sacrifices.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa mga players, coaching staff talagang ang dami nilang sakripisyo para rito. Hindi biro ang ginawa namin, (I am thankful to the players and coaching staff, they sacrificed a lot for this. What we did was no joke),” he said.

Ed Rivera of the DENR Warriors is the most valuable player for his boldness in the court, scoring a total of 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 block. Meanwhile, Ralp Lansang secured 22 points for the DENR, Ryan Abanes and Archie Gamboa scored 20 and 11 ponts, respectively.

For the AFP Cavaliers, Boyet Bautista scored 29 points followed by Romeo Almerol with 17 points and Jerry Lumongsod scored 15 points.

The DENR Warriors will receive P4 million for their chosen charity, the Environmental Heroes Foundation Incorporated. Meanwhile the AFP Cavaliers won P2 million for AFP Educational Benefits System Office.

UNTV Cup Season 8 will give a total of P10 million to various institutions and their chosen charities.—AAC (with reports from Bernard Dadis)

Yulo wins gold in men’s vault at world championships

Carlos Yulo has bagged the gold medal in men’s vault at the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.

Yulo scored an average of 14.916 after two attempts, beating Japan’s Yonekura Hidenobu who ranked second with 14.866, and Israel’s Andrey Medvedev who scored 14.649.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old athlete also took home a silver medal at the parallel bars final. Yulo ranked second with the score of 15.300. China’s Hu Xuwei took home the gold after scoring 15.466, while China’s Shi Cong placed third with a score of 15.066. AAC

UAAP eyes resumption of sports league in February 2022

MANILA, Philippines—The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is eyeing to resume the basketball and volleyball tournaments by February 2022.

UAAP Season 84 president Nonong Calanog on Wednesday (October 20) reported that all basketball and volleyball athletes of UAAP have been fully vaccinated. The league is looking to begin sports training by November to prepare for the competition next year.

“That’s why November, December, January we have about three and a half month for them to train to get back to competition to be able to start on February. Ang volleyball naman, ang target namin doon. is after Holy Week […] more or less that’s the schedule and of course what the government will allow at that time,” he said.

Calanog said they are currently conducting retrofitting and adjustment in their sports facilities.

According to Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairperson Prospero De Vera III, the agency is preparing guidelines for sports activities and student athletes as quarantine classifications continue to ease amid the decline in new COVID-19 cases.

“Ngayong marami na ang bakuna mababa-vaccinate na ang mga studyante, mga athletes, the only thing we have to do is to tweak the guidelines given these circumstances now,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education and the National Task Force Against COVID-19 are aiming to boost the vaccination program for students and teachers. AAC (with reports from Janice Ingente)

Hanoi SEA Games set for mid-May 2022 — POC

MANILA, Philippines — The 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) will be held in mid-May 2022, according to Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Bambol Tolentino.

Tolentino confirmed the schedule on Monday (October 18) after officials from 11 member nations convened online. Vietnam will host the upcoming SEAG and has also agreed with the said schedule.

“The Vietnamese organizers will confirm the specific dates soon,” he said.

The Hanoi SEA Games was originally scheduled from November 21 to December 2 in 2021 but was postponed due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Around 40 sports will be played during the 31st SEAG, with a total of 250 events.

The Philippine team will be participating in 39 sports. –AAC
