(UNTV News)

Comelec replaces VCM at ex-VP Binay’s precinct

Former Vice President Jejomar Binay at the Comelec center airing his complaint after a vote-counting machine repeatedly rejected his ballot.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has replaced the vote-counting machine (VCM) that was assigned to the voting precinct of former Vice President Jejomar Binay in Makati City.

This was after the VCM rejected Binay’s ballot when he voted at around 7 a.m. at precinct 0550C in NB 304 in San Antonio National High School.

The machine kept rejecting his ballot after eight attempts.

The former vice president then personally went to the Comelec center to complain about the glitch.

At a press briefing, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the VCM was defective, adding that it was not only Binay’s ballot that was rejected.

Jimenez said the rejected ballots will be fed by batches to the new machine.

Binay will return to his precinct in Makati City, to be accompanied by Education and Information Division head Atty. Frances Arabe, to feed his ballot to a new VCM.

Jimenez also stressed that Comelec’s quick response to Binay’s concern should not be construed as special treatment because this is part of their measures in addressing the same concerns even in other precincts.

The poll body said it is now addressing similar vote-counting machine glitches that were reported in other precincts. (with details from Aiko Miguel)

President Rodrigo Duterte announced at the kick-off of the bulk water supply construction in Davao City Monday night (November 26) that another government official is about to get fired over allegations of corruption.

“Corruption is not acceptable to me. I need not repeat it every day. Then when I go to Manila, I’m going back, I’m going to fire another undersecretary for corruption,” the President said.

The Chief Executive’s pronouncement comes on the heels of Atty. Falconi Millar’s removal from post as secretary general of the Housing and Urban Development Council (HUDCC) over allegations of corruption.

Despite Millar’s effort to refute the accusation against him, Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Salvador Panelo on Monday said that the President has strong evidence to support claims that the embattled lawyer extorted money from a company.

Based on a complaint filed by the company that had transactions with the HUDCC, Atty. Millar allegedly attempted to extort money from them on two occasions.

HUDCC apparently has pending payments to the said company amounting to millions but has yet to release the funds for it.

Millar purportedly offered to expedite the release of funds in exchange for a considerable amount of money.

“There was a complaint, there was a sworn statement…it came from someone representing a company na merong receivables from HUDCC, so much millions eh hindi yata nila nakokolekta and according to the sworn statement hinihingian siya para ma-release,” said Panelo.

Instead of giving in to Millar’s offer, the company decided to report him to Malacañang. — Joan Nano | UNTV News & Rescue
