MANILA, Philippines – Power and communication lines in the town of Gubat in Sorsogon are yet to be restored two days after typhoon ‘Tisoy’ (international name: Kammuri) unleashed its wrath starting late Monday.
Tisoy’s violent winds and heavy rains ripped off roofs, toppled trees and knocked down power and telecommunication lines when it first made landfall in Gubat, Sorsogon at 11 p.m. on Monday.
The typhoon hit land three times after it pummeled Gubat – San Pascual, Burias Island in Masbate at 4 a.m. on Tuesday; Torrijos, Marinduque at 8:30 a.m. and in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro at 12:30 p.m.
Tisoy forced thousands of residents to flee their homes and seek temporary shelter as the storm barreled through provinces.
As the typhoon weakened and headed outside of the Philippine area of responsibility, residents in Gubat have started returning home and clearing the destruction left by Tisoy.
Schools resumed classes on Wednesday and residents have returned to their normal activities.
However, many are still grappling with the lack of electricity and unstable communication lines in the town.
Most people have to travel 20 kilometers going to Sorsogon City in order to get a signal on their mobile phones and communicate with their relatives after telecommunication towers were damaged by the storm.
Some residents were also forced to wait in line just to have the battery of their mobile devices charged in a station that opened at the capitol of Sorsogon.
Local authorities said it may take a few weeks before power and telecommunication lines will be restored in the province.
Aside from Gubat, nearby areas such as Prieto Diaz and Barcelona are also experiencing difficulty after telecommunication facilities were damaged by Tisoy. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Roderic Mendoza)
