Miss Philippines Catriona Gray

BANGKOK, Thailand – After she wowed the audience with her stunning looks and almost perfect bearing on a huge national costume boosting with creativity, the Philippines’ bet for this year’s Miss Universe pageant, Catriona Gray, is all focused with eyes only on the crown.

Above everything is her determination to push for her advocacy where she combines charity with creativity.

In an interview with UNTV News on Wednesday (December 12), Catriona shared how she is giving her ‘personal touch’ to her awareness campaign.

“I’ve really put up a material that I hope could reach more, which is why I timed it in this way. So the work that I’ve done was focused on the young in Tondo, Manila in regards to education. I’ve actually put up my first original song. I was the creative director and everything for the music video that we filmed in Tondo starring some of the kids in the program,’ she narrated.

Catriona said she wanted to change how people see the children of the slums in Tondo by providing them with proper education so that instead of being associated with trash, foul smell and violence, people would see them just like any other children who deserve care and help rather than pity and mockery.

“To raise awareness and to also move people to donate. It was really important for me to project them in a very uplifting light. I wanted them to see kids being kids because there is something beautiful and pure in children and I feel that once people see that, they would be convinced or moved to give back, that’s my main advocacy,” the Miss Universe Philippines said.

Aside from the youth of Tondo, Catriona also supports the HIV-AIDS awareness campaign which provides free testing, support counselling and public awareness about the auto-immune disease.

“I put up a music video to encourage people just to get tested and also encourage the government to make more testing centers and resources available to different far flung areas,” the beauty queen explained as she believes that there is not enough education and access to resources and procedure against HIV-AIDS in remote areas in the country.

Catriona said she has been working on these projects for three years now even before the Miss Universe pageant. So being given the opportunity to be part of the campaign she said, is already fulfilling.

“I will continue to push for (them) no matter what happens in this pageant…I feel like I’ve been given a big microphone which is amazing and it thrills me so much that I’ve been given this opportunity to further my causes,” the bubbly Catriona said.

Born Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray on January 6, 1994, Miss Universe-Philippines is a Filipino-Australian television host, singer, and model prior to becoming a beauty queen.

Before she was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2018, she won the Miss World Philippines in 2016 and represented the country in the Miss World 2016 in Washington DC in the US where she landed as 3rd Runner-up. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Kath Dumaraos)

Panelo says Catriona Gray should be ‘educated’ on facts of criminal liability age bill

(L-R) Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo and 2018 Ms. Universe, Catriona Gray

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo expressed his gratitude for the concern that 2018 Ms. Universe Catriona Gray has shown, when she stated that the government must focus on why children engage in crimes instead of lowering the age of criminal liability.

Panelo said that, like many Filipinos, Gray may have been misinformed about the facts of the bill that aims to lower the age of criminal liability to 12 years old.

Panelo agrees with Gray about focusing on the problem, which is what the government, he said, is actually doing by rehabilitating the minors.

“Sa batas nakalagay dun yung rehabilitation. Ang focus nga ay rehabilitation. So, you are solving precisely the problem why these people are engaged in crimes,” Panelo said.

He added, “Because the problem is, they engage in crimes. So, what will we do? We will have to rehabilitate them. Learn why they have committed such crimes. And then put them back to the society,” Spokesperson emphasized.

The Presidential Spokesperson said Gray should be educated on the facts of the said bill.

“She may have been misinformed of the facts, given that the opposition to the lowering comes from yung mga dating kritiko ng administrasyon,” Panelo said.

Panelo made the statement when asked about his reaction to Gray’s statement on Wednesday, February 20, at her homecoming press conference.

Ms. Gray has long been known for her advocacy for underprivileged Filipino children and being a supporter and volunteer of the non-profit organization “Young Focus Foundation” – Freema Salonga

Catriona Gray wears Sampaguita-inspired outfit for homecoming parade

MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray donned a jumpsuit terno for her grand homecoming parade in Metro Manila on Thursday.

Gray was onboard a majestic float inspired by her diamond-and-pearl-encrusted Mikimoto crown when she greeted her supporters along the parade route that passed by the cities of Pasay, Manila and Makati.

The Beauty queen wore a Sampaguita-inspired jumpsuit designed by Mak Tumang for her parade.

In a social media post, Tumang explained that Gray’s parade outfit, dubbed as “Sampaguita: A promise fulfilled,” was inspired by the Philippine national flower, Sampaguita.

“Legend has it that its etymology was derived from the Filipino words ‘sumpa kita’, which means ‘I promise you’. This ornamental flower is an inherent part of our landscape since time immemorial,” Tumang said in his Instagram post.

“Interestingly, this flower has a lot to do with the concept of ‘Coming Home’. You know you are home when its distinct sweet and aromatic fragrance tickles your olfactory sense. Moreover, the flowers are usually slung and made into leis which are used to welcome dignitaries or are being peddled in front of churches so as to become offerings,” he added.

Aside from sampaguita, Gray’s jumpsuit was also emblazoned with embroidery inspired by Anahaw.

Tumang said that “it is fitting that we welcome our Queen with Sampaguitas adorned with Anahaw – our national leaf. Catriona will wear this Philippine terno which is a ‘Callado’ (similar to Piña Barong) embroidered gown with stylized Panuelo and Mariposa sleeves.”

Despite the heat, Gray was all smiles as she waved to her supporters who went out to take a glimpse of her parade that started around 2 p.m. in Pasay City. The motorcade ended at Glorietta Shopping Center in EDSA around 6 p.m.

Several roads had been closed and a traffic rerouting scheme was implemented by the Makati City Government and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to give way to the parade.

Filipino designer Mak Tumang

MANILA, Philippines — Apart from her beauty, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray stood out in her gowns in the pageant.

The Filipino-Aussie beauty’s best assets and features were showcased in Filipino designer Mak Tumang pieces.

Last week, three of the stunning outfits of the country’s fourth Miss Universe were featured at a mall exhibit in Pampanga.

This includes the red hot Mayon gown she wore during her crowning moment as Miss Universe 2018; Adarna gown at the preliminaries and Sinag gown during her victory in Binibining Pilipinas.

And for the beauty of the masterpieces, the Kapampangan designer is starting to gain attention in the international scene.

He has been receiving messages and calls from other countries over design works.

“When I was in Arena in Bangkok may mga ibang countries na nagparamdam and there are other candidates and other organization from different countries are messaging me in Instagram in social media,” he said.

Filipinos, meanwhile, are proud of the designer’s success.

“Sobrang ganda kasi makikita mo na siya picture ang ganda, pero ‘pag nakita mong personal sobrang ganda lalo na nakasuot na rin ako ng gown ni Mak Tumang,” said AJ Garcia.

“Proud na proud po kami kasi Kapampanga po siya and Kapampangan po ako,” said Hearty Angele Dabu.

Though Mak was not expecting this kind of attention, he is thankful for the blessing he received.

“Parang halos lahat kilala na ‘ko, pero yung gravity ngayon ko pa lang nararamdaman talaga,” said Mark Tumang.

Tumang is planning to create a gallery for Catriona’s gowns including his other masterpieces. — Leslie Longboen | UNTV News and Rescue
