Miss Philippines Catriona Gray

BANGKOK, Thailand – After she wowed the audience with her stunning looks and almost perfect bearing on a huge national costume boosting with creativity, the Philippines’ bet for this year’s Miss Universe pageant, Catriona Gray, is all focused with eyes only on the crown.

Above everything is her determination to push for her advocacy where she combines charity with creativity.

In an interview with UNTV News on Wednesday (December 12), Catriona shared how she is giving her ‘personal touch’ to her awareness campaign.

“I’ve really put up a material that I hope could reach more, which is why I timed it in this way. So the work that I’ve done was focused on the young in Tondo, Manila in regards to education. I’ve actually put up my first original song. I was the creative director and everything for the music video that we filmed in Tondo starring some of the kids in the program,’ she narrated.

Catriona said she wanted to change how people see the children of the slums in Tondo by providing them with proper education so that instead of being associated with trash, foul smell and violence, people would see them just like any other children who deserve care and help rather than pity and mockery.

“To raise awareness and to also move people to donate. It was really important for me to project them in a very uplifting light. I wanted them to see kids being kids because there is something beautiful and pure in children and I feel that once people see that, they would be convinced or moved to give back, that’s my main advocacy,” the Miss Universe Philippines said.

Aside from the youth of Tondo, Catriona also supports the HIV-AIDS awareness campaign which provides free testing, support counselling and public awareness about the auto-immune disease.

“I put up a music video to encourage people just to get tested and also encourage the government to make more testing centers and resources available to different far flung areas,” the beauty queen explained as she believes that there is not enough education and access to resources and procedure against HIV-AIDS in remote areas in the country.

Catriona said she has been working on these projects for three years now even before the Miss Universe pageant. So being given the opportunity to be part of the campaign she said, is already fulfilling.

“I will continue to push for (them) no matter what happens in this pageant…I feel like I’ve been given a big microphone which is amazing and it thrills me so much that I’ve been given this opportunity to further my causes,” the bubbly Catriona said.

Born Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray on January 6, 1994, Miss Universe-Philippines is a Filipino-Australian television host, singer, and model prior to becoming a beauty queen.

Before she was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2018, she won the Miss World Philippines in 2016 and represented the country in the Miss World 2016 in Washington DC in the US where she landed as 3rd Runner-up. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Kath Dumaraos)

Filipino designer Mak Tumang

MANILA, Philippines — Apart from her beauty, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray stood out in her gowns in the pageant.

The Filipino-Aussie beauty’s best assets and features were showcased in Filipino designer Mak Tumang pieces.

Last week, three of the stunning outfits of the country’s fourth Miss Universe were featured at a mall exhibit in Pampanga.

This includes the red hot Mayon gown she wore during her crowning moment as Miss Universe 2018; Adarna gown at the preliminaries and Sinag gown during her victory in Binibining Pilipinas.

And for the beauty of the masterpieces, the Kapampangan designer is starting to gain attention in the international scene.

He has been receiving messages and calls from other countries over design works.

“When I was in Arena in Bangkok may mga ibang countries na nagparamdam and there are other candidates and other organization from different countries are messaging me in Instagram in social media,” he said.

Filipinos, meanwhile, are proud of the designer’s success.

“Sobrang ganda kasi makikita mo na siya picture ang ganda, pero ‘pag nakita mong personal sobrang ganda lalo na nakasuot na rin ako ng gown ni Mak Tumang,” said AJ Garcia.

“Proud na proud po kami kasi Kapampanga po siya and Kapampangan po ako,” said Hearty Angele Dabu.

Though Mak was not expecting this kind of attention, he is thankful for the blessing he received.

“Parang halos lahat kilala na ‘ko, pero yung gravity ngayon ko pa lang nararamdaman talaga,” said Mark Tumang.

Is she Filipina or Australian? Let Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray answer

MANILA, Philippines – An Australian paper released on Tuesday (December 18) as part of their banner story congratulating crowned Miss Universe Catriona Gray not as Miss Philippines as she represented but of Queensland, crossing out the word ‘Philippines’ and claiming her as their own representative and their “crowning glory”.

The Courier Mail wrote that Catriona is an Australian even when she is the official representative of the Philippines and ran on several occasions, including Miss World, as a Filipina.

Catriona was born in Australia of a Scottish-Australian father and a Filipina mother. She attended school in Queensland until she was 18. Then she moved to the Philippines to pursue her modeling career.

She definitely speaks and sounds Filipino. She speaks fluent English but without any sound of the Australian accent.

Another Australian paper, the Daily Tribune bannered this headline: “Our” Miss universe with pictures of Catriona clearly showing her wearing the Philippine sash.

‘Hit’, a radio station in Australia, was less assuming, with the lead: “An Aussie girl has taken out the title of Miss Universe for 2018, but it wasn’t our chosen Miss Australia!”

Australia’s official candidate Miss Australia Francesca Hung was born of a Chinese-Australian father and an Irish-Australian mother. Miss Australia only made it to the Top 20 of the elimination round.

Catriona lost on a previous run for Miss World having no similar claim from the Aussies.

And just this year, she won in the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 making her the official bet of the Philippines to run in the Miss Universe pageant.

While these headlines from Australia sparked controversy among netizens – from Australians, Filipinos and other nationalities – crowned Miss universe Catriona Gray, who arrived on Wednesday (December 19) for a brief visit in the Philippines, settled disputes on who she is and where she calls home.

“Thank you so much for being here, for making my first trip home such a memorable one. It hasn’t sunk in yet that we won Miss Universe, para sa’yo, Pilipinas (It’s for you, Philippines). I’m so happy to be home. So happy to be back in the Philippines and to see all of you and to also to see my Young Focus family,” Catriona said during a brief stop upon arrival on Wednesday.

During a pre-pageant interview with UNTV News and Rescue Team in Thailand, Catriona spoke of who she really is and she’s very sure of it.

“I am proud to be a Filipino…Well, definitely. I am the only Filipina (in the pageant),” the bubbly, newly crowned Miss Universe 2018 said.

MANILA, Philippines — Two days after winning the title, newly crowned Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray is now back in the Philippines.

Catriona arrived at around 3:30 p.m. via a private plane owned by former Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson.

She was supposed hold a press conference at the Platinum Skies Aviation but was reset to a later date.

Unlike before when the winning Miss Universe would immediately travel to the Miss Universe headquarters in New York after the coronation, Catriona was given time to spend the holidays with her loved ones.

Meanwhile, Malacañang said Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray is set to pay a courtesy call to President Rodrigo Duterte, however, there is no specific date set as of press time.

“Hindi ko lang alam ang specific date but Secretary of Tourism Berna said definitely a courtesy call,” Panelo said.

The palace has already sent its congratulatory message to Ms. Gray for her victory at the Miss Universe pageant.
