Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio is unaffected by President Rodrigo Duterte’s remark calling him “stupid” for his stance on the issue of allowing Chinese fishermen in Philippine waters.

On Wednesday, Duterte called out Carpio after the latter said it would be unconstitutional to allow Chinese fishermen to exhaust the country’s resources.

“Napaka-istupido mo. That is why hanggang diyan ka lang talaga,” Duterte said.

Caprio meanwhile, said the president’s remarks is “not worth a comment”.—AAC

Duterte inaugurates Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge

MANILA, Philippines—President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday (July 30) inaugurated the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge cuts travel time between the cities of Mandaluyong and Makati to five minutes. It is one of the two bridges funded by a grant of the People’s Republic of China and is expected to accommodate about 50,000 vehicles daily. The bridge would also help in addressing traffic congestion.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said that the department, as well as, other government agencies, doubled their efforts and continued their work in completing the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge despite the difficulties and challenges faced during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The President expressed his appreciation for the Chinese government’s generosity in funding the construction of this new bridge that has not only improved mobility and connectivity but also enhanced the resilience against natural disasters. AAC

 

Paglalantad ng identity ng social media users, ipinanukala vs trolling

MANILA, Philippines – Ilantad ang pagkakakilanlan ng social media users – ito ang nakikitang paraan ni dating Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice at 1Sambayan lead-convenor Antonio Carpio upang masugpo ang isyu ng trolling.

Ang social media trolling ay pag-atake ng ilang netizen sa mga hindi pumapabor sa kanilang paniniwala.

“The solution is simple: require all those who comment on online publications, online platforms, to reveal their real identity. If you are from China state your name, state your country of residence,” ani Carpio.

Aniya, hindi dapat payagan ng management ng social media platforms ang mga pekeng account o mga gawa-gawa lang ang pangalan.

Layunin nitong matukoy at agad mapanagot ang sinumang nagpo-post ng maling impormasyon o kaya ay paninira sa social media.

Mahihimok din ang social media users na maging maingat sa pagpo-post ng impormasyon o mensahe dahil sila ay maaaring maparusahan.

“Because if you put your real name you will be circumspect, you will weigh every word you put there because you could be sued for libel or you could be laughed up if you express something ridiculous,” ani Carpio.

Naniniwala ang dating mahistrado na hindi ito mahirap gawin para sa mga nangangasiwa ng social media platform.

Filipinos want to hear about jobs, economy, inflation in Duterte’s last SONA — Pulse Asia

MANILA, Philippines — Among the top issues that Filipinos want to hear during President Rodrigo Duterte’s last State of the Nation Address (SONA) are jobs, economy, and inflation according to the recent Pulse Asia Survey.

According to the June 2021 Nationwide Survey on SONA, topping the list of issues that Filipino adults would like to hear President Duterte discuss in his last SONA are jobs or livelihood (38%) and the Philippine economy (35%).

Other issues include measures to control inflation (33%) and plans to expedite the government’s COVID-19 vaccination program (31%).

Filipinos also want to hear about increasing workers’ pay (26%), improving the educational system (26%), and measures to be taken to prevent further Chinese incursion into the country’s territory in the West Philippine Sea (25%).

Meanwhile, a big majority of Filipino adults (69%) have heard, read, or watched any of the past SONAs delivered by President Rodrigo R. Duterte before Congress.

Awareness is more notable in Metro Manila (83%) and Mindanao (87%) than in the rest of Luzon (55%) and the Visayas (62%).

The nationwide survey is based on a sample of 2,400 representative adults 18 years old and above conducted from June 7 – 16, 2021 using face-to-face interviews. AAC
