MANILA, Philippines — One of the strongest and seasoned teams in UNTV Cup is the AFP Cavaliers.

From claiming the trophy at the off-season games, the soldiers are even more high-spirited as the Armed Forces of the Philippines top brass is in full support of the Cavaliers this season 6 of the league of public servants.

As the Cavaliers are set to face the GSIS Furies in the second game on Sunday, head coach Sonny Manucat reveals their additional weapons.

Coach Manucat said, “Meron kaming dalawang bagong player, medyo bata. Hopefully, makatulong at, in time, mag-gel sa team. Parehas silang Air Force… in terms of playing skills medyo advantage. Palagay ko ang mga experienced player namin mapapasabay na rin.”

(We have two new players, they’re quite young. Hopefully, they can help, and in time, will gel with the team. They are both from the Philippine Air Force. In terms of playing skills they could be of our advantage. I think our old players will get dared to catch up.)

With the two additions, Romeo Almerol Jr. and Jerry Lomongsod, Coach Sonny is confident his two-time champion side can hit the target again this season.

“Siyempre ang champion caliber, ang dalawang beses nag-champion, gusto namin ibalik iyon. Actually, tingin ko ngayon malaki ang chance namin lalo kasi may dalawa kaming bagong players. We’ll just take it one game at a time and hopefully makuha namin ulit.”

(Of course, our being champion-caliber, two-time champion, we want to bring it back. Actually, I think we have a big chance this season (to win championship) because we have two new players. We’ll just take it one game at a time and hopefully, we could be champion again.)

Meanwhile, also this Sunday, the multi-season champions Judiciary Magis will play their first game this season with the Ombudsman Graft-busters.

The Magis will be lead by its power trio, Warren Ybanez, Don Camaso and Chester Tolomia while the Graft Busters will be reinforced by a former professional baller Noynoy Falcasantos Jr.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Air Force (PAF), over the weekend, reported that it has intercepted an unknown aircraft attempting to enter the country.

A statement authorized by PAF Public Affairs Office chief, Lieutenant Colonel Maynard Mariano, said that two FA-50 Aircraft were ordered to intercept an unknown aircraft at 9:36 A.M on September 2, 2021.

The statement said that the Philippine Air Defense Control Center (PADCC), through its radars, detected an unidentified inbound aircraft in the Philippine Air Defense Identification Zone (PADIZ) approximately 120 nautical miles North West of Bolinao, Pangasinan.

“The unidentified aircraft was heading towards Philippine airspace. Coordination with the CAAP classified it to be an unknown track of interest,” the statement read.

The report added that the PADCC issued a “scramble” order to two FA-50 stationed at the Air Defense Alert Center and gave them the mission to intercept the unknown aircraft for visual identification.

The FA-50s flew at the maximum allowable speed towards the direction of the unknown aircraft that was at 21,000 feet flying at 265 knots heading North East, it said.

“At about 4 minutes into the intercept, the unknown aircraft changed direction towards the North and increased its speed to 400 knots and headed away from the Philippine airspace. The intercept was terminated at 9:45 A.M.,” the statement further read.

The Philippine Air Force assured that it will continue to protect the country and prevent unauthorized foreign aircraft from flying within the nation’s airspace.

“In the past decades, aircraft flying without clearance would willfully violate the Philippine airspace knowing that they will not be challenged; today our airspace is being closely monitored jointly by the Philippine Air Force and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines,” it guaranteed.

Afghanistan Crisis: OFWs escape to Dubai, Qatar with help from employers

MANILA, Philippines — Relatives of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Afghanistan confirmed with UNTV that their family members have reached Dubai safely after narrowly escaping the unrest in the Taliban-controlled country.

From Dubai, they are expected to return home to the Philippines soon.

On Tuesday (August 18), 35 Filipinos arrived in the Philippines from Afghanistan.

Based on records of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), there are around 130 Filipinos in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Joseph Glenn Gumpal, who acts as president of the Samahang Pilipino in Afghanistan, said 11 more Filipinos have already made it to Qatar with the help of their employers.

UNTV was able to get in touch with other stranded Filipinos in Afghanistan whose fates remain uncertain after a series of flight cancellations.

Among them is Rio Adrias, who confirmed that they are in constant communication with the Philippine Embassy in Pakistan which has jurisdiction over Filipinos in the Afghan country.

The only problem, Rio said, was that the chartered flight that they were supposed to board on Tuesday was canceled and they were told that they would need to take a commercial flight.

“Hindi pa rin po namin malaman kung kailan makakalapag ang eroplano dito sa Kabul kasi puno pa rin po ng tao ang Kabul airport. Hindi pa rin po lumilikas nasa 10,000 Afghan po ang naghihintay [na] doon na po natutulog,” she said.

Rio is one of the 24 Filipinos currently staying in a shelter some distance away from Kabul airport.

As for their personal needs, Rio said they still have enough supply for several days.

They also worry, however, for the safety of other Filipinos stranded in areas with no access to food and proper lodging.

“Sa pamilya ko, huwag kayong mag-alala ako’y nakakangiti pa pero ako’y naiiyak. Pero doon po sa gobyerno po natin sana po talaga una, matulungan nyo kaming mailikas talaga dito kaming lahat na gustong umuwi kasi talagang ang hirap,” Rio said asking for government support.

“Hindi safe. Hindi kami okay. Hindi namin ma-explain yung pakiramdam namin dito,” she added.

Rio said if she makes it back to the Philippines, she would never go back to Afghanistan.

All she asks for is a livelihood support from the Philippine government in recognition for their contribution to the country’s economy. MNP (with reports from Rey Pelayo)
