MANILA, Philippines — The National Housing Authority (NHA) will build a total of 6,400 temporary shelters with a floor area of 22-square-meters for residents affected by last year’s Marawi siege.
The agency targets to finish 1,170 of these units in barangay Sagonsongan in March.
Meanwhile, NHA General Manager Marcelino Escalada, Jr. said he will maintain an open communication with the local government unit of Marawi for suggestions and improvements.
“They have requested me if and when NHA can redesign a much bigger space from 22 sqm to 36 sqm and with a certain privacy. Meaning, may partition naman (with a partition) because most of them have a bigger size in terms of family members. So we are seriously considering a bigger space for site 2,” Escalada said.
NHA is set to build 2,700 permanent shelters in the area until 2021.
The agency also plans to use their 7,000 sqm. property in Marawi to put up five buildings for Marawi’s formal sector.
“I think for the first time we shall be able to provide a permanent shelter of a low-rise building in Marawi because that is also one thing that is lacking in the case of public school teachers, mga empleyado ng gobyerno ng Marawi (and other Marawi government employees). Wala silang magandang matirahan (They have no access to proper housing),” Escalada said.
At present, Escalada said more or less 50% of the housing project in Marawi is finished. 500 completed units are to be presented to President Rodrigo Duterte on January 30. – Leslie Longboen | UNTV News & Rescue

The government’s ‘Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa’ Program has been temporarily suspended to give way for the repatriation of overseas Filipinos and stranded students in Metro Manila.
National Housing Authority (NHA) General Manager Arcelino Escala Jr. said this is following the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to prioritize the stranded individuals in Metro Manila to decongest the area to prepare for the ‘new normal’ setting.
“This was a clear instruction from the President, unahin pauwiin ang ating mga kababayan na stranded dito sa Maynila (Prioritize our fellowmen stranded in Metro Manila) and these are the OFWs (overseas Filipino workers), the construction workers, ating mga turista at mga estudyante (our tourists and students). That is the arrangement right now,” he said.
Escala said the Balik Probinsya will resume once all stranded Filipino have been sent home.
“I foresee that in the next month, let’s say for example July, I think bababa na ang demand ng stranded (there will be less demand for stranded citizens) and therefore Balik Probinsiya will now take our second rollouts by that time,” he said. –AAC(with reports from Asher Cadapan Jr.)
