Nothing ruins a seemingly flawless complexion more than dark knees and elbows. They are a constant source of embarrassment and a challenge to lighten because of constant friction.
The skin around these areas is devoid of oil glands; causing it to dry out easily. A buildup of thick, dead skin turns dark overtime from frequent bending, kneeling and leaning.
Other factors that add to the darkening are genetics, obesity, diabetes, hormonal imbalance, sun exposure and improper hygiene.
Fortunately there are remedies available to reverse and prevent recurrence of dark, unsightly knees and elbows.
For immediate results dermatologist Dr. Daisy Camitan of Dermgem clinic, recommends a continuous treatment of light to moderate chemical peeling augmented by whitening creams.
Dr. Camitan discourages experimenting with chemicals on your own. She said such procedures should be done by a professional to avoid accidental burns through misuse of products.
It can be pricey but summing up its guaranteed effectiveness, may prove to be more cost-effective in the end. You’ll probably end up spending as much anyway from trying out off-the-shelf products with hit or miss chances of success.
But if budget is tight and time is not of the essence, you can always try these natural solutions:
BAKING SODA + MILK
Baking soda exfoliates dead skin cells while milk lightens skin with lactic acid.
- Mix one tablespoon of baking soda into milk to make a thick paste.
- Apply paste to knees and elbows, scrubbing gently in circular motion
- Leave for five minutes before rinsing with water
- Repeat procedure every other day
COCONUT OIL / OLIVE OIL
After each bath, massage either coconut or olive oil on affected areas to hydrate dry skin.
Alternatively, you can make a paste using equal amounts of sugar and olive or coconut oil. Before taking a bath, apply it on your knees and elbows in a circular motion to exfoliate them. Rinse with soap and water.
Lemon has natural bleaching properties that can get rid of dark skin. Cut the lemon in half and rub knees and elbows with lemon juice. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes to 2 hours. Rinse with warm water and moisturize.
Turmeric is long known for its skin lightening properties. Mix it with milk and honey then apply solution over knees and elbow for 25 minutes before washing off with soap. Repeat several times a week.
Never forget to moisturize after rinsing applied mixtures. Follow the above methods consistently and you will see improvements in just a few short weeks.
